Breaking Down the Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer
Spider-Man and Co. started getting visitors … from every universe. Thus comes a line from the new Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer to make every Marvel fan stop in their tracks.
After the first trailer was released, we got hints and glimpses of our multiversal madness that came in the wake of Mysterio’s public unmasking of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Now, we see those characters join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with every bit of expected drama.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts, is set to premiere December 17, 2021. The Marvel movie stars Tom Holland (Peter Parker / Spider-Man), Zendaya (MJ), Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), and Marisa Tomei (May Parker) all reprising their roles from the previous Spider-Man films, with Benedict Cumberbatch joining the fray as Doctor Strange — but maybe don’t call him “Stephen,” that’s weird.
Let’s break down the appearances of the rest of Peter Parker’s friends and foes below.
Doctor Strange
“Please Scooby-Doo this crap.”
- Doctor Strange pushes Peter Parker into the astral plane
In lieu of Tony Stark / Iron Man, another member of the facial hair duo has stepped up to assist: Doctor Strange is playing the mentor role in this film. In the second Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer we open to him explaining the consequences of magic gone wrong.
“When you botched that spell where you wanted everyone to forget that Peter Parker’s Spider-Man,” he says, “we started getting some visitors … from every universe.” (But was it even the botched spell? Because Loki and Scarlet Witch are doing some of their own timeline tinkering. The need for answers is mighty!)
Throughout the trailer we see Doctor Strange trying to get Peter, MJ, and Ned to fix the magical fallout. He also chases Peter, who steals a box with the Seal of the Vishanti. There’s a few scenes of Strange leading Peter through the multiple dimensions and folding cities as seen in Doctor Strange, as well as a brief fight sequence between Peter and Strange on a train. With Spider-Man wielding sorcerer’s magic in a black and gold Spider-suit, however, it’s clear the two resolve their differences.
- Spider-Man and Electro
Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Electro, and More
“You’re not Peter Parker…”
From Spider-Man’s past comes a whole host of sinister villains: The Lizard, Sandman, Electro, Doctor Octopus, and Green Goblin. Since they’re all fated to die in their own universes when they battle Peter Parker, they have more than a grudge against this web-slinging hero. The catch is … this isn’t their Peter Parker, as Doctor Otto Octavius realizes. So does that make the classic antagonist more on our Peter’s side? He and Green Goblin certainly aren’t in the final battle-seeming sequence above.
- Green Goblin
- Doc Ock
Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus appear to be some of Spider-Man’s first visitors. They’re powerful. They’re deadly. But will they be the wild cards in Spider-Man’s fight to save his city and family? One thing’s for certain … another notable appearance, the proud Spidey hater J. Jonah Jameson, won’t be on our hero’s side.
- J. Jonah Jameson
What Does It All Mean for Peter Parker?
- Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned Leeds
As we saw in the first Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, the gang’s clearly on the run. Spider-Man is Public Enemy #1 after his alleged murder of Quentin Beck. So Peter is fighting battles on every front, from personal to professional — if crimefighting and Avenging is the teen’s ultimate career path.
How will Spider-Man solve this one? Will he close the multiverse? Unlikely, as Doctor Strange needs these splintered timelines for his sequel. Plus, those villains are dead elsewhere — Peter Parker’s heart and conscious might look for another way to defeat and preserve these men.
Will he save everyone he loves? MJ sure looks like she’s taken a page from Gwen Stacy’s book as she falls from a tall tower. May, Happy Hogan, and the rest of Spider-Man’s allies don’t look much safer based on some quick-cut footage. There’s the usual peril for a superhero film, but now there’s the added weight and magnificence of years’ worth of Spider-Man movies coalescing into a boss battle for the ages.
Who will win? And what will it cost? We’ll find out in December.
