Captain America Fights Himself- Cap vs Cap in Marvel Comics and the MCU
Over the years, Captain America has fought many wretched adversaries. The Red Skull, Baron Zemo, Galactus, Thanos, and more! He’s outsmarted and undermined countless sinister villains, manipulative cosmic forces, and vengeful foes, but perhaps the most difficult fights have been against another unexpected character: Captain America.
If your head is spinning from reading that, it should be. You’re not seeing double, you’re seeing Captain America’s complicated history in motion. But let’s be honest, you’d do a double take too seeing two Captain Americas engaged in a bout of fisticuffs. But it’s happened more than once before!
Let’s look at just a few of the best Captain America vs Captain America fights.
Steve Rogers vs William Burnside
Any comic fan can tell you that continuity can get… messy. That’s an understatement to say the least. But when the Avengers initially pulled Steve Rogers out of the ocean, perfectly preserved in a block of ice, there was one big question: who had been masquerading as Captain America? For decades, someone wore the costume, wielded the shield, and claimed to represent the American ideal, and yet there could not be two Steve Rogers. And there wasn’t.
Instead, there was a Steve Rogers fanatic named William Burnside. A child so obsessed with the original Captain America that he did everything in his power to be just like him. He served in the military and fought against Red Skull. He stormed old Nazi basements, and even found their secret scientific files. It was there he found Captain America’s secret identity.
He also found a research papers that claimed to have the formula for the “Super Soldier Serum” and before doing any tests, he demanded the government try that formula on him. He changed his face look like Cap, he trained to fight like him, and did everything he could to be him. But when the Super Soldier Serum drove him mad and Steve Rogers came back, there was only one thing to do: fight.
Captain America vs Super Patriot
In the comics, John Walker spent a lifetime looking for a fight to win, chasing the fame and glory of being a hero. He claimed to be the TRUE American Dream, and went far out of his way to prove that Captain America wouldn’t go far enough to protect his country. He thought Steve Rogers was far too lenient and weak to truly commit to his cause. So John Walker rolled the dice with the Power Broker, who gave him a super serum of his own, and he became the Super-Patriot.
When Steve Rogers decides that the US government is overreaching, he gives back the vibranium shield and abandons his role as Captain America. Without missing a beat, John Walker stepped into the role. He fought as Captain America, and he was willing to punch harder and think less for the government. He did whatever they asked, no matter what. His actions were lethal, and in his mind, justified.
That dangerous combination didn’t sit well with Steve Rogers, so it wasn’t long before he fought for the role of Captain America again.
The Falcon vs. US Agent
Captain America is a hero and an icon. It’s more than just a role to be passed down, it’s a legacy to live up to and a standard to uphold. So when Steve Rogers does decide to patch the torch, he hands it to Sam Wilson, The Falcon.
When Sam doesn’t feel equal to the task, the government finds someone better for the role: John Walker. That’s the story arc currently being explored by Disney+’s show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, so it’s not unlikely that we’ll see this classic comic book fight on our screens very soon.
In the comics, Sam Wilson’s Falcon and John Walker’s US Agent have both been Captain America. But when these two Cap’s don’t see eye to eye, their battle goes sky high. In both the comics and the MCU, the Falcon doesn’t have super strength or super speed. And while he is an extremely skilled fighter, he has to use all of his greatest tactics against the super soldier John Walker. Hopefully we get to see this fight in the series.
Cap vs Hydra Cap
In a 2017 comic book event called Secret Empire, Marvel Comics told the tale of how Steve Rogers had secretly been acting as a sleeper agent for HYDRA for all of his life. How HYDRA tried to brainwash him from a very young age, and how the sentient Cosmic Cube Kobik rewrote reality itself in Red Skull’s image. She made Captain America into Hydra Supreme.
All of the Avengers work together to defeat Hydra Supreme, but he was too powerful. It takes a massive amount of effort and collaboration, but Kobik eventually brings back the original Steve Rogers from within the Cosmic Cube. Only the original Cap is worthy of lifting Mjolnir, and with its power, defeating Hydra Supreme.
MCU Cap vs Cap
There were too many iconic scenes in Avengers: Endgame to choose the one most iconic moment. After all, Steve Rogers wielding Mjolnir against Thanos happened in the very same movie! Nevertheless, it was incredible to see a fight between Captain America from the future, and Captain America from the very first Avengers film.
It’s a fascinating fight that ricochets off of high rises, breaks glass, and even requires the help of Loki’s scepter. Did Endgame Cap lose his touch? Did Avengers Cap simply train harder?
Or was there something more? All we know for is that their fight was epic, and that that really is America’s—
