Dungeons and Demons: Get to Know the Demogorgon Before Stranger Things Season 2

Stranger Things Season 2 is almost upon us, and we are getting so excited to watch!  While we wait out the final day before returning to Hawkins, Indiana, let’s have a refresher course on the evil entity that terrorized the town in Season 1- the monster known as the Demogorgon!  (Possible Season 1 Spoilers to Follow!)

Demogorgon Origins

The Demogorgon is actually the name of a chaotic evil beast found in the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons beginning with the Eldritch Wizardry book in 1976.  It is also called the Prince of Demons, and is a two-headed creature with snake and ape attributes.  Its abilities included hypnotic magic and spreading disease with its whip-like arms.

Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will confront it in their home Dungeons and Dragons game, using their characters to defeat the beast with a lucky roll of the dice.

Turning Hawkins Upside Down

In the show Stranger Things, the monster isn’t exactly a Demogorgon in the traditional sense- rather, that is the name given to the creature by the boys who are plagued by the beast following their fateful game night.  After the kids played Dungeons and Dragons, the monster began its attacks.  It first appeared in Mirkwood forest and dragged Will Byers into the Upside Down.

The Demogorgon in the show is a terrifying humanoid from the Upside Down world that can open portals in reality to travel across dimensions.  It was brought into our universe by Eleven’s psychic powers, which were pushed in experiments by the cruel Dr. Brenner.

The tall, thin monster has no face, and its head opens like a flower with many rows of sharp teeth.  It is predatory, with an uncanny and supernatural attraction to blood, and has massive clawed feet and hands with which it gores its prey.  The Demogorgon withstood immolation, gunfire, and a beating with Steve’s nail-headed baseball bat.  It was seemingly defeated only by Eleven’s psychic abilities.

What Comes Next?

At the end of the first season, the boys are seen playing Dungeons and Dragons once more, this time pitted against the Thessalhydra enemy, a creature with many snaking heads, a considerable increase from the two-headed Demogorgon.

From the trailers, we have seen that a new, multi-limbed monster has come to Hawkins- could this be the Upside Down representation of the Thessalhydra itself?  Only time will tell!
