Esther Skandunas — Jumping the Shark! A Custom Art Show

By Sideshow on Sep 1, 2025

The Phantom Fin: A Tale of Needle Teeth by Esther Skandunas

This piece is inspired by old pirate tales.

Sailors speak of The Abyssal Wraith and the spectral shark not as legends, but as haunting truths passed down across generations. Some claim to have seen the ghost ship in fleeting moonlit visions, its tattered sails untouched by the wind, hovering just above the surface of the ocean. The spectral shark is always there, circling silently as though it guards the ship’s secrets. The ghostly pair remain eternal enigmas — undead echoes that haunt the waves.

To see them is a warning, to seek them is folly, and to understand them is impossible.

About the Artist

I have been creating prototype clothing for the toy and collectibles industry for the past 13 years. The majority of my career as a Costume Fabrication Artist has been working with Sideshow in the Cut and Sew Department with Tim Hanson. I started working with Sideshow as a freelance artist for their 1:6 scale department working with Kevin Ellis. I worked solely in 1:6 scale for four years before moving over to the Premium Format™ collectibles. I worked full-time in the Cut and Sew Department at Sideshow for seven and a half years.

Prior to working in the toy and collectible industry, I worked in theatre creating costumes as a seamstress and tailor for The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego for 6 years, and moving on to work as the Costume Director at Grossmont Community College in San Diego for 13 years. During my Costume Director role, I helped teach the students how to sew and construct costumes. During that time, I was also one of the resident Costume Designers for the Theatre Program.
