The Academy Awards’ full 2023 nominations lists are out. And, as expected, some of the greatest and most notable films in geek culture have made the cut. Below, take a look at the categories to see which of your fandom faves have a chance of winning big during the 2023 Oscars.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is full of sweeping visuals, emotional narratives, and incredible acting. Therefore it’s no surprise that it’s nominated for:

  • Best Costume Design: Ruth Carter

Avatar: The Way of Water

Our return to Pandora with Neytiri and Jake Sully was as incredible as we all wanted it to be. No wonder, then, that Avatar: The Way of Water is nominated for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Sound
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Visual Effects

The Batman

The latest take on the Dark Knight has been praised as one of the best yet. Naturally, The Batman is therefore flying toward:

  • Best Sound
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  • Best Visual Effects

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Rian Johnson, who also directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, created a scathing comedy/mystery masterpiece with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. So of course it was nominated for:

  • Best Adapted Screenplay

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

We’re not lying — Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is a magical and emotional take on a classic fairytale. Perhaps it can enchant voters and take home:

  • Best Animated Film

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

This little kitty started in Shrek and has only continued to impress in his solo movies. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is clawing its way toward:

  • Best Animated Film

Turning Red

Puberty, parental troubles, and a unique twist on cultural mythology make for something amazing in Disney’s Turning Red. The Academy Awards thus acknowledged it for:

  • Best Animated Film

Additional Noteworthy Nominations

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, both of Fantastic Beasts, Harry Potter, and Wizarding World fame, are nominated for Best Actor and Best Actor in a Supporting Role, respectively, for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Brendan Fraser, who you know from The Mummy and DC Comics’ Doom Patrol, is nominated for Best Actor for The Whale.

Cate Blanchett, known for playing Hela in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, is in the running for Best Actress for Tár.

Brian Tyree Henry, recognizable from his roles in Into The Spider-Verse, Eternals, and Godzilla vs Kong, competes for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Causeway.

Barry Keoghan, most recently seen as The Joker in The Batman and Druig in Eternals, contends for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for The Banshees of Inisherin.
