Eternia 101: All About He-Man & the Masters of the Universe

He is Adam. Prince of Eternia and defender of the secrets of Grayskull! With a flourish of the Power Sword, Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, the sworn protecter of Eternia and the most powerful man in the universe. This cult classic 1980s cartoon lives in the imaginations of fans everywhere, and the fantasy lore runs deep. There is an equally iconic spinoff featuring Adam’s cousin, Adora AKA She-Ra, as well as multiple continuations of the original animated series.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

Thanks to Mattel and production company Filmation (which also made Star Trek: The Animated Series, the Archie Show, various DC cartoons, and even a Ghostbusters adaptation), He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is retro gold. Filmation’s signature animation style, with bold colors and and vibrant character designs, helped cement He-Man as a Saturday morning cartoon staple.

With just two seasons, the series boasts 130 episodes. Filmation extended the success of Eternia into the original cartoon’s spinoff, She-Ra: Princess of Power, which aired for three years after He-Man ended. Later, He-Man found new life in continuation series by Cartoon Network and Netflix.

Live-Action He-Man in Masters of the Universe

As is the trend for modern movies adapting childhood favorites, there’s an element of realism to the live-action Masters of the Universe. Well, as real as you can get with a fantastical setting like Eternia. In the film, Adam (played by Nicholas Galitizine) must learn about his Eternian heritage. Both versions of the hero are the son of an Eternian, King Randor, and an Earth explorer, Queen Marlena. Like many heroes, his mixed heritage leads to a strong sense of justice and desire to protect those who need it.

Who Are He-Man’s Allies and Enemies?

• He-Man Main Enemies: Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beast Man, Goat Man, Trap Jaw, Kobra Khan, Tri-Klops, Mer-Man

Since Masters of the Universe is a classic fantasy adventure story, it’s always a question of good versus evil. He-Man’s allies are often part of the Heroic Warriors, while Skeletor’s legion is known as the Evil Warriors. Both factions are constantly at odds for control over Eternia. Many of the members of both sides have special abilities or are hybrids between man and beast.

To protect his family, Prince Adam only tells a few of his allies about his secret identity. At first, this list only includes his close friend Man-At-Arms but slowly Prince Adam shares with others his He-Man persona, such as his constant ally Teela. Like his owner, Battle Cat also has a regular, everyday identity named Cringer. In the cartoon, He-Man is also joined by his trusted companion Orko, a floating extra-dimensional being whose face is always obscured under his cloak.

The Forces of Evil in Eternia and Beyond

In the fight for Eternia, Skeletor is He-Man’s most famous and enduring archenemy. That maniacal cackle is forever etched into fans’ brains. But he’s not the only one. He-Man must also contend with Skeletor’s Evil Warriors, but also other villains. Some of the Evil Warriors, like Evil-Lyn and Kobra Khan, even prove to be worthy adversaries all on their own. The Netflix series also introduces a new villain named Scare Glow.

Additionally, Eternia faces the corruption of the Evil Horde, led by Horde Prime. Often, Hordak is the main face of this villainous army. Hordak and the Evil Horde also serve as a connection between He-Man and his cousin, She-Ra, who often fights against Hordak.
