The Top 6 Famous Skrulls in Marvel Comics

Now that Marvel’s Secret Invasion has concluded, MCU fans are left wondering: What’s next for the Skrulls?

Well, there’s a lot of history to draw from in Marvel Comics. The Skrulls have made appearances since the 1960s, and in the Marvel universe, they’ve existed for millions of years. As in the MCU, their home planet of Skrullos has always been a place of conflict and struggle.

We’ve already met Talos and his family. Raava is also an existing comics character, as is Varra. So, looking back at the comics, who are some of the most famous (and infamous) Skrulls around? Here’s a breakdown of the top 6 Skrulls in the Marvel universe.

Dorrek VII

This Skrull Emperor was a descendant of Dorrek I. Under the first Dorrek’s rule, the Skrulls entered a devastating global war. Once, there were three races of Skrulls: Eternals, Primes, and Deviants. After the war, only the Deviants remained, having wiped out both other Skrull races.

In a continuation of this violent culture, Dorrek VII murdered his emperor so he could ascend to the throne. He also married the emperor’s daughter, R’Klll (more on her later!). Even as far back as Dorrek VII’s rule, the Skrulls were plotting to invade Earth. To this end, Dorrek ordered his scientists to begin crafting the perfect spy, a super soldier who could further the Skrull Empire.

Kl’rt (Super-Skrull)

From Dorrek VII’s plans, the Super-Skrull was created. As a decorated soldier in the Skrull Army, Kl’rt was highly respected. But once he gained the powers of the Fantastic Four, he became an eternal enemy of the super hero team — and doomed to a life of failure after failure.

Over the years, the Super-Skrull became one of the Fantastic Four’s most consistent enemies. He even worked for Thanos at one point! Carol Danvers was able to banish Super-Skrull to hyperspace. When he eventually escaped, he resumed his life of criminal failures. However, later in his life, the Super-Skrull would become a complicated ally to an important hero: Hulkling.

Bonus Fact: Kl’rt’s daughter, Jazinda, also worked for the Skrull Army. When she was about to be caught retrieving a Skrull artifact from the Kree, she swallowed the Sy-Torak Gem and gained resurrection powers. Jazinda then fled to Earth and began working alongside She-Hulk.

R’Klll

R’Klll is the daughter of the emperor killed by Dorrek VII. Though others in her place might have just been a silent queen, R’Klll was never one to back down. She eventually killed Dorrek VII when she deemed him too cowardly of a ruler. Compared to her late husband, R’Klll was a peaceful ruler — at least in public appearance. She was also the Skrull leader during the Dark Phoenix’s first appearance.

Everyone believed R’Klll was annihilated with her daughter, Anelle, and the rest of Tarnax IV. However, a last-minute secret from Anelle prompted R’Klll to teleport away from Galactus’ attack. She disguised herself as a Kree warrior, Tanalth, by altering her DNA. As Tanalth, she worked to orchestrate the impending Kree/Skrull Alliance.

Anelle

Dorrek VII’s younger brother Prince Dezan began a theme of outcast pacifists among the ruling Skrulls. Later, the emperor’s own daughter, Anelle, would continue the pacifist streak. Though the Super-Skrull pursued her hand in marriage, Anelle actually fell in love with Captain Mar-Vell, a Kree super hero. Against all the odds, they even had a son.

Sadly, Anelle perished along with countless other Skrulls when Galactus consumed the Skrull Throneworld. But Anelle had managed to secretly send her son to Earth.

Hulkling

Dorrek VIII, son of Anelle and heir to the Skrull throne, grew up as Theodore “Teddy” Altman on Earth without the full knowledge of his royal family history. He believed his mother was Mary-Jo Altman, who was actually the Skrull handmaiden of his birth mother.

As a child, Teddy used his shape-shifting abilities to fit in with his peers. On the inside, however, there were entire galaxies setting him apart from the other boys. Eventually, he became involved with the Young Avengers, calling himself Hulkling. He also learned about his full ancestry, including his father being Kree. After some time with the team battling enemies like Doctor Doom, Teddy married his fellow Young Avenger Wiccan (the son of Scarlet Witch). Together, they now rule over the newly united Kree/Skrull Alliance. Yes, that political union is as difficult as it sounds.

Veranke

In the comic books, the Secret Invasion had equally large stakes as the MCU TV series, but on different scales. Whereas super heroes were not involved in the Nick Fury-led series, the comic Secret Invasion created mass paranoia in which heroes, spies, and global networks were caught in a web of deception.

And at the center of that web? Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman. Well, actually, it was Veranke, the Skrull Empress, posing as Spider-Woman. This Skrull leader had once been a religious zealot, exiled by Dorrek VII. She managed to infiltrate various Avengers teams as Spider-Woman, planting the seeds of discord that initiated the Skrull’s massive Secret Invasion. While the invasion ultimately failed, her actions led to Norman Osborn creating a new world order in which super-villains disguised themselves as beloved super heroes.

While the above Skrulls have played instrumental parts in Marvel Comics history, there are still many, many more Skrulls. Professor X even had his own team of mutant Skrulls called Cadre K! The Skrull Empire reaches far across their galaxy as well as into our own.
