10 Inspirational Pop Culture Quotes for 2022

Time truly flies, because we’ve already entered 2022! If you’re not super excited yet, don’t worry — it’s only the first week. We know each new year comes with its own new challenges and trials. However, we have a wealth of wisdom to find in the fandoms we love.

Insight and encouragement can come from a galaxy far, far away, or Eternia, or even our own world and beyond. And all that positive reinforcement comes from the resilient, strong, sometimes silly, and always adventurous characters from the movies and shows we either grew up with or turn back to for comfort in trying times. Below, let’s look at 10 of the most iconic and inspirational quotes from across pop culture.

1. “Somebody has to save our skins!”

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope™ (1977)

Leia Organa™ is quick-witted and smart-mouthed. She’s purposeful, driven — and she’s not ready to let poor planning get in the way of her mission. In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Leia, Chewbacca™, Luke Skywalker™, and Han Solo™ are cornered by a group of Stormtroopers™. There seems to be no escape. But Leia won’t give up that easily.

Blasting away a hatch, she directs the guys into a garbage chute. When her decision is questioned, she replies very simply that someone had to save their lives. Princess Leia’s words urge us to take responsibility for our own welfare and they give us the strength to get ourselves out of sticky situations.

2. “I have the power!”

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983 – 1985)

He-Man from Masters of the Universe is actually the alter ego of Prince Adam of Eternia. Adam must say the phrase “By the power of Grayskull!” to become He-Man and do battle with evildoers like Skeletor or Hordak. After his transformation, he declares, “I have the power!” Very simply, we can look at this quote from the TV series as a way to find power within ourselves. Although Adam/He-Man is enchanted, he is also confident and strong-willed. He is a hero because he makes himself one.

3. “First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule, Daniel-san, not mine.”

The Karate Kid (1984)

In The Karate Kid, Daniel LaRusso is frustrated with his lack of progress. He doesn’t want to learn the basics. He wants to spring into action with high-risk, high-power moves. Although Daniel himself is not physically or mentally capable of these moves yet he is, above all, angry at Mr. Miyagi for holding him back.

But Mr. Miyagi, known throughout pop culture as one of the wisest teachers in film, tells Daniel something we should all remember. He tells him he has to learn how to walk before he can fly. Daniel has to hone his skills — as well as his patience. For anyone who is prone to impulsive behavior or wants to be the best right away, heed Mr. Miyagi’s words.

4. “Sometimes even the wisest of men and machines can be in error.”

The Transformers (1984 – 1987)

We’ve all felt that immense guilt when we don’t live up to our own perfectionist expectations. That crushing regret or embarrassment when you make a mistake, big or small, can eat you alive. Well, instead of listening to that mean voice in your head that won’t allow you to let go of the past, listen to the Autobot leader Optimus Prime.

This Transformers character carries the burden of two planets relying on his protection. He has universes worth of intelligence and empathy. He still makes mistakes. And he’s willing to forgive himself for them, as you should be, too.

5. “Going in one more round when you don’t think you can. That’s what makes all the difference in your life.”

Rocky IV (1985)

Rocky Balboa is one of the most famous pop culture boxers. Endowed with a fighting spirit, endurance, and perseverance, he even has a flight of steps that you can run up in his honor. For anyone who’s completed the “Rocky steps” in Philly, you know how good it feels, how absolutely freeing and uplifting it is to accomplish such a grueling feat.

The above Rocky quote is about standing up against all odds. It’s about gritting your teeth through the pain and swinging into either a real or metaphorical battle for what you believe in — for your integrity, your passion, your honor. And what better way to go into a new rear than facing challenges head on with fists high?

6. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is, technically, about three teens who cut class for the day. But the comedy movie is much more than that. The movie tells us that there are more important things in life than a fast-paced, breakneck journey through the education system. Education is vital, but so is enjoying life and the myriad wonders offered by the world. So is living in the moment.

Ferris and his friends know this. They spend their manufactured day off exploring, attending a parade, and disobeying stringent rules. Most importantly, they take time for themselves to simply exist and enjoy. This is your sign to give yourself a minute to simply pause.

7. “Go ahead, Lickety Split. Make a wish. Who knows? Maybe it can change things.”

My Little Pony: The Movie (1986)

In the animated fantasy film My Little Pony: The Movie, Baby Lickety Split, the dragon Spike, and all of the other beings on Ponyland are threatened by an evil witch. The Spring Festival — as well as the island itself — are in danger. Smooze, a slimey ooze substance which makes anyone it touches woeful, is spreading toward the Dream Castle. The ponies despair.

Baby Lickety Split and Spike find water. Spike suggests wishing away the smooze, but Baby Lickety Split isn’t convinced. Still, Spike urges her to try. And sometimes, that’s all we can do. Sometimes wishing for change will help us to action, or it will at least bring us hope in our darkest hour. This quote reminds us that wishes, like friendship, are magical.

8. “Have fun storming the castle!”

The Princess Bride (1987)

This is the funniest quote on this list, but it’s no less meaningful. From The Princess Bride, “Have fun storming the castle!” is an encouraging line for any situation. Shout it after your friend as they go for a job interview, or say it to yourself in the mirror if you need motivation to start your day. No matter the occasion, it’s guaranteed to give you all the gusto you need to defeat any enemy, emotional or otherwise.

9. “Be excellent to each other!”

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

What’s wiser than the above statement? Bill Preston and Ted Logan may be a couple of deadbeats, but they’ve got the biggest, kindest hearts in cinema. They save the world through jokes, guitar riffs, and the power of friendship. These words, accompanied by some sick dance moves, are repeated throughout the cult classic movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure as a reminder on how to treat your fellow humans — with excellence (duh).

10. “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”

Back to the Future Part II (1989)

Finally, we go to the alternate timeline in Back to the Future Part II where we’ve figured out flying cars by the year 2015. Although that dream didn’t come to fruition, we can hope. And that’s one fun thing to take out of this quote.

The other is a cliché, but it’s worth repeating. In 2022, take the road less traveled. Wander off the beaten path. You don’t need a roadmap for your life, and there’s no reason to keep coloring inside the lines. Be like Doc Brown and create a crazy invention just for fun. Or be like Marty McFly and jump into an unknown adventure just for the fun of it. There’s no limit to your potential or the new year’s possibilities.

Happy New Year, geeks!
