Stark Week Day 4: Iron Man Comic Book Fun Facts

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to his comic book origins, Tony Stark has amassed countless fans over the years. He first debuted as Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 (1962). Six years later, he had his own title.

Since those initial appearances, Iron Man has become a founding member of the Avengers, a hero to the entire 616 universe (and beyond), plus a constant fan favorite. Here are some fun facts about Iron Man from where it all started, the comic books themselves!

In addition to high-powered roller skates and a Transformers-esque car suit, Tony has also used a Thorbuster Suit. Much like the infamous Hulkbuster armor, the Thorbuster is designed to take down one of Tony’s fellow Avengers when he loses control. The Thorbuster can absorb Mjolnir’s magical energy, allowing Iron Man to go head to head with the God of Thunder when Thor’s vengeance threatens to unbalance Earth politics. Though it’s empowered by an Asgardian crystal, Thor still manages to defeat Tony’s armor.

There’s only so much space in the universe for big egos. That’s why Doctor Doom and Reed Richards have such a longstanding rivalry — but the same goes for Doctor Doom and Iron Man. Each man is hailed as a genius without peer, and they use their abilities to achieve what they believe to be right. These two have clashed over and over again. Deep down, there’s surely a level of respect there but beneath all that heavy metal, it can be hard to bring to the surface.

Following the devastating Kree-Skrull War, Iron Man realized that the heroes of Earth would have been more formidable had they joined forces. He proposes this to a group of super hero leaders as a way to monitor threats throughout the universe and later, the Multiverse. Initially, some of these leaders declined Iron Man’s invitation to join the Illuminati. Eventually, however, the need for this secret organization proved apparent when multiversal threats kept popping up. The founding members of the Illuminati included Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Professor X, Black Bolt, Reed Richards, and reluctantly Black Panther.

A younger version of Kang the Conqueror, known as Nathaniel Richards, wears an Iron Man-like armor. He goes by Iron Lad when he fights alongside the Young Avengers and he even shares a brief romance with Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang. Iron Lad is not a permanent fixture of the Young Avengers, but his impact on Wiccan, Hulkling, Kate Bishop, and the others withstands time and space. With his leadership, the Young Avengers stand up to their elder peers and establish a name for themselves as a super hero team.

Of course, with over six decades of comic book storytelling and nearly three decades of films, there is so much more to learn about Iron Man.
