Is Martian Manhunter a villain or hero?

With a name like that, nobody could blame a reader for being uncertain. J’onn J’onzz has a painful offworld past much like Superman. Their native planets faced unspeakable tragedies. In J’onn’s case, Mars dealt with a divisive civil war. In some versions of the planet’s history, the Green Martians and the White Martians are at war. Other histories show that J’onn’s own brother, Ma’alefa’ak, constructs a debilitating psychic plague that burns Martian civilization to the ground.

Either way, J’onn becomes accidentally marooned on Earth. He adopts the moniker Martian Manhunter, a nod to both his beloved homeworld and his initial career as a detective, or “manhunter.” Alliteration just makes everything better!

Martian Manhunter Appearances in DC Media

Throughout DC media, Martian Manhunter has made numerous appearance. He’s often portrayed as a founding member of the Justice League, cementing his status as a very important DC super hero. In live action, Martian Manhunter has appeared on Smallville and Supergirl, plus crossover episodes of The Flash — further evidence of his strong connection to Superman. The hero also makes a brief post-credits scene in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Elsewhere, Martian Manhunter is also prominently featured in many films and TV series of the DC Animated Universe, as well as the compelling series Young Justice. On Young Justice, a fellow Martian, M’gann M’orzz AKA Miss Martian, is a member of the titular team.

What are Martian Manhunter’s powers?

Even among the Justice League, Martian Manhunter is especially strong. As a Martian, he possesses many super powers, the most important being his telepathy and shapeshifting. Both species of Martians have these two abilities, forming an integral part of their culture. In addition, J’onn has standard super-human abilities such as flight, super-strength, and invisibility. However, the malleable nature of his Martian physiology grants J’onn J’onzz impressive levels of each of these powers. His ability to manipulate his body are nearly limitless.

On that same note, his telepathy isn’t merely reading minds. Martian Manhunter can enact illusions and psychic attacks, read and detect thoughts at extra-planetary distances, and even use telekinesis. While these abilities are innate among Martians, J’onn J’onzz is uniquely skilled as both a warrior and a detective.

Who would win: Superman or Martian Manhunter?

With all this impressive power, the question remains: Who would win if Superman faced Martian Manhunter? Superman famously said in JLA #86 (2003) that Martian Manhunter is the “most powerful being on the face of the Earth.” A bold claim, especially considering power scales can shift among different writers, timelines, and eras. But it’s an interesting question to consider.

As far as superpowers go, Martian Manhunter has a slightly longer and less restrictive list than Superman. If they were to face each other, it might come down to weaknesses. Kal-El, as a Kryptonian, requires the charge of a yellow sun to fuel his powers. Too long without this energy source and he begins to weaken — not to mention if Kryptonite is involved. On the other hand, J’onn’s main weakness, like all other Martians, is a crippling fear of fire. Ultimately, the outcome of their showdown might be determined by environment and enemy more than anything else. Just make sure Firefly stays far away.
