Keanu Reeves’ Recent Projects & Accomplishments
Keanu Reeves is truly an icon. A longtime film star, he’s cemented his legacy in the industry with characters such as Neo, John Wick, and others. Recently, Keanu Reeves’ projects have shifted toward more than just movies. This passionate and multitalented man has returned to beloved film roles, of course, but he’s also branched out successfully into video games and comic books.
Before 2021 ends, then, let’s take a look back at Keanu Reeves’ recent projects and accomplishments across pop culture — including some upcoming releases!
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run
Although appearing only briefly, Keanu Reeves steals the scene in this SpongeBob Squarepants movie. In Sponge on the Run, Keanu plays Sage, a glowing tumbleweed with a human face. Like the name suggests, Sage offers wisdom and bravery in exchange for the completion of a challenge.
But Sage knows something Patrick and SpongeBob don’t know — that their courage comes from within, not from a superficial object. Our heroes’ interactions with Sage are thus pivotal moments in the animated adventure. And teaching confidence and concepts of self-worth as a magical tumbleweed is something only Keanu Reeves can accomplish.
Bill & Ted Face the Music
Nostalgia is all the rage these days. We all need to feel the familiar goodness of our all-time faves, right? Thus comes a return to the cult classic comedy and sci-fi world of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure with the 2020 film Bill & Ted Face the Music. Keanu reprises his role as Ted Logan.
He brings that silly charm and heart of gold back in the most wonderful way. Keanu and Alex Winter shine, embracing the absurd and always staying true to the theme of being excellent to each other. Also in the film, the adult Ted has to own up to some responsibility and learn to trust his daughter. It’s a wonderful representation of the journey all of us must take as our children and the universe grows beyond us, and a part for which Keanu’s kindness and grace are perfectly suited.
Embracing his action hero side, Keanu Reeves takes on the video game world of Cyberpunk 2077 as Johnny Silverhand. And in typical Keanu style, the man’s got music and martial arts up his (metaphorical) sleeve.
Johnny was a fan-favorite from the moment he hit the game trailer screen. The Night City Rockerboy is rather selfish and callous in the game, though, and has quite the temper. He cooperates with V only to ensure his own survival. While this personality is far removed from Keanu Reeves’ usual personas, it’s fun to see him flex his acting skills and appear as a helping (silver) hand whenever your protagonist is in need.
BOOM! Studios’ comic book BRZRKR is a 12-issue limited series created and co-authored by Keanu Reeves in his comic book debut. The story follows an immortal half-man, half-God named B. who takes contract kill work in the hopes of discovering the secrets about his past and how to end his own suffering permanently. If that sounds gruesome — it is! Just look at the title!
Keanu Reeve’s BRZRKR story is already slated for anime series and live-action film adaptations by Netflix. Keanu will star as B. in both projects, keeping his passion close to home and giving his fans everything they want — put simply, more Keanu!
The Matrix: Resurrections
Over two decades after the original The Matrix was released, we were thrown back into a simulated world with The Matrix: Resurrections. Keanu’s most popular character, Neo, is trapped in a machine-controlled mind game. In a nice meta twist, he’s designing The Matrix Trilogy video games and is asked to return to the franchise once more.
Since the film just came out — available to stream now on HBO Max — we won’t give anything away. Keanu’s involvement in the sequel is huge, however, and another one of those nostalgia projects that leaves audience members cheering.
DC’s League of Super-Pets
DC’s League of Super-Pets is a highly anticipated animated adventure following the exploits of Superman’s pup Krypto the Super-Dog, Batman’s companion Ace the Bat-Hound, and other enhanced animals of varying backgrounds and abilities. Keanu Reeves’ voice role has yet to be disclosed, but we have to assume this new DC movie is going to be a real treat — pun totally intended.
