Avingers, Avongers, & More Commonly Misspelled Marvel Words

Look, spelling is hard. All those hidden vowels, silent letters, and “i before e except…” rules are difficult to keep straight. This is a blog, you know, filled with writing and spelling. Therefore we really, really get it.

So, having to spell complicated comic book words? That’s even harder. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is no stranger to some tricky spellings. However, there are some that trip us up more than others. Here’s a list of the most commonly misspelled Marvel words. Plus, we’ll tell you how to spell them right — not that that will help us from making the same mistakes over and over again…

Infinty Saga, Infintity Saga, Invinity Saga, Infijity Saga

This one really breaks us because there’s a lot of i’s to keep track of. Plus, if you type fast, this one is just gonna get away from you. Typos abound. Additionally, if you’ve only heard it said aloud, those “v” and “f” fricatives, which already belong to the same sound type category, will be very similar to your ears. Honestly, Infinity Saga having the most misspellings is kind of apt. There’s an infinite number of misspellings for an expansive, encompassing MCU term.

Ragnorak, Ragnarock

Ah, Ragnarok. Oh, bother. A word filled with a bunch of a’s and o’s is just bound to cause headaches. So we totally get the frequent misplacements of each vowel inside Ragnarok. Plus, like Korg, we enjoy rocks, so why can’t we end it with the word rock? Well, because we need to follow the Norse spelling of this great mythological catastrophe. While that’s fair, it’s surely caused a lot of “did you mean…?” Google searches.

Avingers, Avongers

The Avengers are one of the most famous super hero teams, but that doesn’t save them from merchandising mistakes. Found in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the “Avongers” knock-off merch plays with that “a” and “o” issue we were just talking about in Ragnarok. Then we also have the “Avingers” mistake, which could possibly be blamed on Korg’s New Zealand accent as he recollects the tales of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Myolneer, Mew-Mew

Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, uses the Old Norse spelling. Well, besides that cool little ø. But if you’re a monolingual English speaker, you don’t necessarily know that “j” sounds like a “y” according to Nordic rules. Hence why we kind of sound it out phonetically. And that’s a very practical way to approach this. Or you can just make like Darcy Lewis and call Mjolnir “Mew-Mew.” It’s affectionate and effective.

Madyson, Madison, Madisynn

The “y” isn’t where you thiiiiink! Madisynn’s name is so hard to spell that the spelling explanation follows her every introduction. And you know what? She has the charisma to pull this off, while anybody else could make it annoying really fast. But really, she’s just being helpful. And one thing is for sure — her Starbucks order is always correct!
