Painting the Prototype

It wouldn’t be an epic X-Men battle without their robotic nemeses, the Sentinels. Here, you can see the paint process for the Sentinel base on the X-Men statue. Casey Love achieved a brilliant charred and destroyed effect for this iconic enemy, telling a huge part of the statue’s story with the paint alone. Plus, that metallic finish on the purple faceplate is simply gorgeous. It gives the impression of actual dented metal on what was previously an unpainted prototype.

Did you know that the paint prototype for a statue is carefully separated into tons of tiny little pieces? These separate paint masters are the basis of everything, even if they don’t reflect the final assembly of the statue that ships to your door. This way, the artist can spread out each gray piece for complete access to every paintable surface and then fit everything back together in stunning, multicolored finish.

See if you can spot the individual items that make up Wolverine and Colossus in the above image. We see a shining metal head, a uniformed torso, and some very impressive muscles on display! Even the individual explosion effects are on their way to a fully detailed color gradient of flames and smoke.

Finally, let’s put some of this together. Colossus gets in on the action as he’s keyed into the “burning” faceplate of his defeated opponent. And wow, just look at how they both shine! Material realism and comic book action contrast perfectly to create action that really pops. From his silver legs to his bright red boots, Piotr is sure putting his best self front and center. And that’s all thanks to the talent and skill of the artists behind this awesome statue.

Fastball Special: Wolverine and Colossus Statue

“First rule about the Fastball Special … you don’t talk about the Fastball Special.”

The Fastball Special: Colossus and Wolverine Statue measures 18” tall, 14.93” wide, and 19.12” deep as a colorful team-up bursts off the comic page and onto your shelf amid a fiery explosion. The excitement begins on the left, with backdrop panels depicting Wolverine and Colossus in their fight against a Sentinel. In the center, our two heroes emerge from the comic book page itself in three-dimensional glory, with the silver Colossus braced to launch a snarling Wolverine. The famous “fastball special” concludes on the right in vibrant panel art as well as on the base with a severed, flaming Sentinel faceplate.

More About the Fastball Special

This action-packed, fully sculpted X-Men collectible features custom original art in the style of classic X-Men comics. The astonishing artwork itself is printed on every angle of the backdrop’s exterior, including a front and back cover spread with dialogue bubbles, yellowing on the page edges, and a halftone texture, which recreates that beloved retro look.
