Cult classics are movies that have amassed major, almost obsessive, followings. Some of them weren’t the most well-received at the time of their initial release, while others hit the ground running. Regardless, they’re all household names now. And interestingly enough, many of these films are perfect spooky season viewing.

That’s right — tons of cult classics are part of the horror, sci-fi, thriller, and dark fantasy genres. That’s partially due to the inherent drama and visceral, strong reactions that horror movies evoke in their viewers. Also, some of them can just be absolutely campy, and that brand of comedy has its unique charm. Whatever the reason is you’re drawn to horror, you probably have a favorite cult classic that’s made the cut for our list.

Beetlejuice (1988)

“It’s showtime!”

What if the afterlife was a little bit like an extra brutal trip through the DMV, and there’s wedding festivities thrown into the package? Beetlejuice is a rotting, raunchy good time. It’s definitely more comedy than horror, but the laughs are slipping from the audience at a hanging. If that’s your cup of tea, the beloved celebration of all things goth and ooky also earned itself a modern sequel. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) is a fun follow-up that’ll have you singing “Day-O” all the way down the street.

The Crow (1994)

“Real love is forever.”

Tragic and achingly romantic, The Crow is for every Nirvana and Poe fan, for the rock stars and poets. The entire film is saturated with grunge aesthetics and so much feeling that it’s like getting an autopsy while you’re alive. No, seriously. The Crow will reach right under your ribs and make you process grief, romance, despair, and revenge in a single sitting. Plus, it’s got impressive fight sequences and a gorgeous final performance from Brandon Lee.

IT (1990)

“I’m every nightmare you’ve ever had. I’m your worst dream come true.”

Killer clowns are a horror staple. There’s just something absolutely mesmerizing about a villain dressed in vibrant colors. Plus, clowns are supposed to be silly and sweet, not sinister. And yes, Pennywise is technically an extraterrestrial shape-shifter. But his preferred form is a dancing clown that clonks and honks his way through Derry, Maine in IT. So put on your wig and clown makeup and get ready for that rewatch … every 27 years!

The Lost Boys (1987)

“Maggots, Michael. You’re eating maggots.”

Speaking of horror staples — we really can’t get enough of vampires. The Lost Boys is an ’80s extravaganza full of bloodsuckers, trench coats, hair gel, and motorcycles. It’s a moody teenage tale of just a touch of misfortune, but mostly mischief. Dangerous desire, a cool mom, and the most hilarious little brother to ever grace the screen round out this must-see monster movie. Keep the party going forever when you press play this month!

Scream (1996)

“What’s your favorite scary movie?”

Scream is subversive and satirical. It pokes fun at everything about slasher movies while also cementing itself as one of the most iconic slasher movies ever. Ghostface is a villain of all time, after all. And the self-aware script almost makes you complicit in the terrible things happening to those teens. Plus, it’s equal parts earnest and laugh-out-loud hilarious; who can forget Stu bemoaning how mad his mom and dad will be at his serial killer antics!? Quintessentially ’90s, Scream is a bloody enjoyable watch for all involved.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

“My family’s always been in meat.”

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is credited with kickstarting the slasher/serial killer craze. Leatherface inspired the hulking, slow-paced, masked villain. And, of course, we have to give credit to our OG Final Girl, Sally. Overall, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is stomach-churningly disgusting, and yet you can’t peel your eyes away. Perhaps it’s because the grisly, gristle-filled flick is based on true events. You know best as to why you like it so much. But suffice it to say, it’ll live on in history whether you love it or hate it.

Ghostbusters (1984)

“Who you gonna call?”

If you picked Ghostbusters, it means you like an extra helping of cheesy ’80s on your horror. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! Ghostbusters bursts with jokes, ectoplasm, and absurd imagery like a possessed Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Overall, though, this movie — and its subsequent sequels — are about the bonds between friends and a commitment to saving your city. Besides, isn’t that unbreakable level of community the most beautiful part of loving horror and sharing it with fellow fans?

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

“I see you shiver with antici … pation!”

Cue the music! Obviously, every Halloween playlist features “Time Warp” and plenty of other tantalizing tunes from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. An astounding musical masterpiece, Rocky Horror has taken its place in the pop culture hall of fame. Everyone recognizes the costumes, knows the dances. You’ve probably been to a local performance or screening during October. Because it’s not easy having a good time … unless you’re watching Rocky Horror!
