Sideshow’s Week in Geek: Beyond Fest

There are so many ways to Let Your Geek Sideshow, and we as geeks are always looking for fun ways to express our fandom.  Conventions, festivals, and special screenings are a perfect way to interact with your favorite comics, movies, and cartoons, and even get to know a bit about the people behind the media.

Sideshow’s Week in Geek spotlights some of the cool and exciting ways we share our style as pop culture fans on and off the clock.  This week- BeyondFest!

Sideshow staffer Eric recently got to Let His Geek Sideshow at Beyond Fest, an epic film event for genre fanatics- plus, he got to meet David Cronenberg!  Read on to hear more about his experience…

What is Beyond Fest?

Beyond Fest is the highest attended genre film festival in the United States and takes place here in Los Angeles. It’s become a haven for genre aficionados in Southern California and consistently offers amazing slates of films and events year after year.

Did you attend any special panels or screenings?

I was fortunate enough to attend the majority of the David Cronenberg retrospective screenings at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, CA. It was an amazing lineup!

  • Dead Ringers on 35mm, followed by a post screening Q & A with writer/director David Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore. This was moderated by Mick Garris and recorded live for his Postmortem podcast.
  • The Fly and Naked Lunch on 35mm. Following the Fly, a Q & A with writer/director David Cronenberg, actress Geena Davis, and composer Howard Shore.
  • Videodrome and eXistenZ on 35mm. Following Videodrome, a Q & A with writer/director David Cronenberg, actresses Debbie Harry and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and composer Howard Shore.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

I’m humbled to say I had the incredible opportunity to meet David Cronenberg for a signing. I’ve admired his work since I was very young, and it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to get a chance to meet him. He autographed Sideshow’s Brundlefly statue for me, and told me that he had one himself!

Anything else you want to share?

If you’re a genre fan in Southern California and have yet to make it out for any Beyond Fest events, I highly encourage you to do so next year!

Big thanks to Eric for sharing his Beyond Fest experience with us!  Be sure to check out our last Week in Geek, where we showed off our #Inktober artwork!
