Comic books and horror are a match made in hell. They go together like screams and queens, or slashers and clumsy chase scenes. It’s a combo that just makes sense. But not all comic book horror is made equal. That’s why we’ve set out to uncover the spookiest comic book characters.

What determines how spooky something is? And what’s the difference between spooky and scary? We’re so glad you asked.

Many villains are scary. That’s to be expected. But to be truly spooky requires a certain level of paranormal, supernatural creepiness. To be clear, spooky doesn’t always mean evil. Spooky characters represent a corruption of expectation — they’re connected to death and tragedy in ways that deliciously push the comfort levels of readers. Now that we’ve established the parameters, let’s pull back the curtain on the spookiest comic book characters of all.

Hallows’ Eve

With a name like that, you know she’s bringing some serious tricks and treats to the fight. As the girlfriend of Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly, Janine Godbe is no stranger to life in the shadows. In fact, her real name is actually Elizabeth Tyne — she changed it after going into hiding when she killed her abusive father. Years later, she uses newfound powers to conjure Halloween masks that imbue her with different abilities. She’s summoned the strength of Frankenstein’s Monster, a ghost mask to get in and out of tight spots, a witch mask to cast magic, and even masks with the faces of Spidey, Captain America, and other heroes to use their powers!

Hellboy

Hellboy is a prime example of a character who fits the spooky mold yet isn’t evil at his core. Mike Mignola’s infernal antihero certainly looks the part — blood-red skin, horns, tail, and a hulking appearance. At first glance, most people would fear Hellboy. But actually he seeks to protect the world against occult forces by working for the BPRD. Hellboy tales are rife with eldritch terrors and panels filled with exquisite shadow, which makes them the perfect choice for late-night reading.

Solomon Grundy

Certain primordial forces govern the DC Omniverse. The Flash is a conduit of the Speed Force, while Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing are Avatars of The Green. But there are also more mysterious forces at work, namely The Grey. It’s believed that aspects of The Grey tainted the resurrection of Cyrus Gold. The result was an amalgamation of disparate parts, the immortal and invincible behemoth known as Solomon Grundy — not unlike Frankenstein’s Monster. He has clashed with nearly all members of the Justice League and his undead presence is an eternal affront to the living.

Martha Wayne as Flashpoint Joker

A mother’s love is generally viewed with warm feelings of trust and safety. Unless, of course, you’re Batman. In his case, family is never quite what you’d expect. And in DC’s Flashpoint timeline, not even a mother’s love is immune to corruption. The Joker of this timeline is none other than Martha Wayne, a twisted wrench in the Wayne family — especially when young Bruce is deceased and his father Thomas becomes Batman. Bruce’s parents challenge our views of Batman and The Joker by exploring their deepest motivations. The spookiest part of all might just be how easy it is to understand Martha’s reasoning.

Deadman

It’s nearly impossible to discuss the science of spooky without delving into death itself. And there is hardly a hero out there more intimately acquainted with death than DC’s Deadman. As a member of Justice League Dark, Deadman is often involved in missions that require a more arcane expertise. He is able to possess other living beings since he is, in fact, a ghost. That name really is spot on. While alive, Boston Brand was an acrobat but after he was killed by an assassin, Rama Kushna charged his spirit with the task of bringing justice to those who need it. He’s even saved Batman’s life.

John Constantine

Another member of the Justice League Dark is also touched by evil. That would be John Constantine, the notorious English detective specializing in the occult. John has had a troubled life full of fiery deaths and murderous mysteries. All of this has led him to adopt a cynical worldview that helps shield him from further hurt.

However, his vast knowledge of the dark arts makes him an extremely useful ally — he even predicted the Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the past, he helped Swamp Thing discover his connection to The Green and he’s had many failed romantic dalliances, most famously with Zatanna and King Shark. John often operates in the shadows, lit only by the glow of his ever-present cigarette.

Ghost Rider

While Johnny Blaze is arguably the most famous Ghost Rider, he’s neither the first nor the last in the Marvel Universe. The Ghost Rider is actually an earthly avatar of the Spirit of Vengeance, meaning anyone whose soul is consumed by vengeance can be called to ride. This position is not without its strings (or rather, chains) but it also grants immense power to whoever holds the title. Few have withstood the Penance Stare and held on to their sanity. Plus, it doesn’t get much spookier than a grinning skull encased in hellfire.

Spawn

While we’re down in Hell, we’d be remiss to not mention Al Simmons, AKA Spawn. Much like Ghost Rider or even The Crow, Spawn is consumed by a desire for retribution — and he’s not picky about how he gets it. After he was murdered, Al made a deal with a devil — literally. His contract with the demon ruler Malebolgia allows him to work as a Hellspawn, an officer of Malebolgia’s army with a suit made of necroplasm. This necroplasmic armor renders him nearly invincible and essentially all-powerful, a third player in the eternal war between Hell and Heaven.

Madelyne Pryor

As we’ve seen before, it’s upsetting to witness a beloved character undergo a terrifying transformation. And that is exactly what Madelyne Pryor represents. As a clone of Jean Grey, one of the founding members of the X-Men, Madelyne is doomed to live in the shadow of her genetic template. She even married Scott Summers first and gave birth to Cable. But eventually Jean returned, as she always does, and a lifelong struggle for autonomy was ignited within Madelyne. She harnessed the demonic powers of Limbo and has proven herself a worthy adversary of Jean on multiple occasions. Only time will tell which side of her personality will win.

Mister Sinister

Of course, there wouldn’t be any Maddy at all without Dr. Nathaniel Essex himself, AKA Mister Sinister. Don’t be fooled by his recent tomfoolery in X-Men comics. Mr. Sinister truly lives up to his name when he manipulates genetics to get his way. No strand of DNA is safe from his pale gloved hands. While he does have a wicked sense of humor, his wicked streak of cruelty runs far deeper.

Many heroes have fallen victim to his machinations — most recently, he even orchestrated the genetic corruption of mutantkind’s most powerful leaders. Thanks to his affiliation with Apocalypse and his own genetic tampering, Mister Sinister’s power boasts a long list of accomplishments.

The Corinthian

If killer charisma had a yearbook photo, it would be The Corinthian’s chilling grin — all three of them. When Lord Dream disappeared, The Corinthian decided to travel to the Waking World. There he inspired humans to do terrible things, creating generations and generations of some of the most twisted minds and serial killers. Originally, he wasn’t supposed to harm humans. However, in the Waking World, he found pleasure and nourishment in cutting out and eating their eyes.

In all honesty, we could blame Dream for The Corinthian’s corruption. Dream once brought him to the Waking World, and The Corinthian stole the eyes from an orangutan’s corpse while it was being dissected for scientific research. You could say that’s where he developed the taste, and that hunger could never be satisfied within the intangible Dreaming.
