The Only Creatures Capable of Surviving on the Planet Hoth

Hoth is a windswept wasteland. It is a prolonged winter, an infinite desert of ice. Considered inhospitable, the planet is located in a remote star system far from civilization. It is subject to freezing cold temperatures both day and night. Snow covers the planet. However, these deterrents to colonization serve the Rebel Alliance well when they are in need of a secret outpost for their revolutionary schemes. The humans, then, find a way to exist by wearing fur and layers, plus sheltering deep underground. And when heroes such as Luke Skywalker get caught in the bitter nighttime maelstrom, warm bacta tanks can reverse the frostbite and damage.

Humans weren’t really meant to be there, of course. Hoth doesn’t present any sort of ideal living scenario. Because of Hoth’s environmental conditions, the planet has only been shown as the home of two native species. Learn more about these animals, as well as the place they call home, below.

Wampa

• Physical Characteristics: Large and white, with razor-sharp fangs and claws
• Height: 2.5 m
• Species: Furred biped
• Predator or Prey: Predator
• Friendly to Humans: No

Wampas are scarily strong. Their white fur allows them to camouflage within their snow-streaked habitat. Surprisingly stealthy, these carnivores can sneak up on unsuspecting prey and incapacitate them in a single strike. Then, Wampas bring their catches back to their cave dwellings in order to enjoy an extended meal. Meat keeps well in the cold, after all. Wampa lairs are often littered with the picked-clean bones of devoured Tauntauns.

In the film, a Wampa attacks Luke Skywalker’s Tauntaun. Luke himself is not the target, but he has to deal with the consequences of the encounter. The Wampa also doesn’t really discriminate between types of food, so any hot-blooded mammal will do. Hanging upside down from the cave ceiling, Luke must act quickly to ensure his own survival.

Tauntaun

• Physical Characteristics: Tall and gray furred, with horns and a long tail
• Height: 2.0 m
• Species: Snow lizard
• Predator or Prey: Prey
• Friendly to Humans: Yes

When the Rebels showed up on Hoth, they quickly domesticated Tauntauns. Found roaming in droves, Tauntauns can withstand daytime temperatures, but must shelter during the night. Tauntauns are also sure-footed and swift. They are able to traverse Hoth’s hills faster than mechanized speeders. Although it was unwise to leave Echo Base in most instances, Tauntauns could be used for necessary patrols or reconnaissance.

Han Solo takes a Tauntaun out to find his missing friend, Luke. Sadly, Han’s Tauntaun freezes to death before it can transport the two men back to base. This unfortunate and untimely death proves useful when Han cuts open the creature’s stomach. Shoving Luke into its stinking, steaming guts, Han saves both himself and the young Jedi from the snow lizard’s fate.

With a vast galaxy to explore, Star Wars provides plenty of fascinating fantasy and sci-fi creature designs. So, do you prefer the tame and docile Tauntaun or the wild and unpredictable Wampa?
