Your Guide to Video Game Sequels for 2026 and Beyond

Video games are a welcome respite from the perils  and pitfalls of the real world. That’s why it’s always nice when the makers of a series you love announce that another entry is on the way for you to look forward to playing. The comfort of familiarity mixed with the excitement of something fresh hits just the right spot to get the brain’s happy chemicals flowing.

Here’s a serotonin-boosting list of some upcoming video game sequels, for 2026 and 2027, to brighten up your National Video Game Day.

CONTROL Resonant

• Release Date: September 24
• Developer: Remedy Entertainment

This action RPG is a narrative sequel to Remedy Entertainment’s 2019 release Control. The first game followed Jesse Faden as she attempted to solve the supernatural mystery of the lockdown at the Oldest House. Resonant follows Dylan, her estranged younger brother, who has to fight an unknown hostile entity through the streets of Manhattan while he looks for Jesse.

Is Jesse missing in the normal way or in the paranatural way like fellow Remedy protagonist Alan Wake? Is Dylan fighting the Hiss, Jesse’s enemies from the first game, or something completely new? Will this game have more connections to other games in Remedy‘s Connected Universe (like previously mentioned Alan Wake)? Fans have just a few more weeks to wait until Control Resonant releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC to find out for sure.

Grand Theft Auto VI

• Release Date: November 19
• Developer: Rockstar Games

GTA VI has been a long time coming. The game’s life cycle thus far has generated a lot of buzz, from trailers breaking single-day viewing records twice to other big headlines around pricing and delays.

All of these subjects have sparked plenty of discussion within the gaming community. Hopefully Jason and Lucia’s romp through Miami-inspired Vice City gives the fans what they’ve been waiting for when Grand Theft Auto VI is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19.

Metro 2039

• Release Date: February 4, 2027
• Developer: 4A Games

This first-person shooter takes place four years after 2019’s Metro Exodus and introduces a new protagonist called the Stranger. This game and its predecessors are based on the Metro series of books by Dmitry Glukhovsky, who is working closely with the 4A team to craft a narrative inspired by the real-world invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Glukhovsky notes that the game will be darker than anything in previous Metro titles, which take place in an already pretty dreary post-apocalyptic world.

Metro 2039 releases February 4, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation

• Release Date: April 8, 2027
• Developer: Square Enix

The development team at Square Enix promises that this last piece of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series puzzle will complete the rather complicated picture created by the previous two entries. Revelation‘s release will mark the end of over 10 years of the series’ life cycle; Square announced that a remake to 1997’s Final Fantasy VII was in development at E3 (remember E3?) all the way back in 2015. The final entry in the trilogy will be available on all platforms on April 8.

Kingdom Hearts IV

• Release Date: Late 2027
• Developer: Square Enix

Surprise, it’s real! Square initially teased a bit of footage from Kingdom Hearts IV in 2022 during the series’ 20-year anniversary celebration, but there wasn’t any further news about it for another four years. The company released a new trailer with story threads, gameplay, confirmation of Coco as one of the game’s worlds, and a release date window at Disney’s D23 fan event earlier this summer.

This entry is the first new Kingdom Hearts game since 2020’s Melody of Memory and the first numbered entry since 2019’s Kingdom Hearts III. It marks the beginning of the “Lost Masters” arc of the story and will incorporate narrative beats and characters from some of Kingdom Hearts‘ mobile titles. Kingdom Hearts IV is scheduled to release on all platforms in late 2027.

Until Dawn 2

• Release Date: January 28, 2027
• Developer: Firesprite

Original developer Supermassive Games is not working on Until Dawn 2, but it is still a direct sequel to the 2015 choice-based horror game Until Dawn. The story will follow the members of a ghost hunting group who stage paranormal encounters for content but face very real, very dangerous forces when they start filming on an abandoned tropical island.

The announcement of this sequel came off the back of the release of a movie adaptation and remaster of the first game. Until Dawn 2 will be available on PlayStation 5 early next year.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3

• Release Date: 2027
• Developer: Dimps

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 released 10 years ago, so fans of the series were thrilled at the announcement of a new entry. Xenoverse 3 takes place over 100 years after Xenoverse 2 and promises “a completely new Dragon Ball experience.” A playable demo is already available and on a road trip of sorts; Bandai Namco has taken the demo to various events all over the country all summer and will continue to do so through the end of this year. The final game will be available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC at the end of 2027.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

(Remakes and New Entries)

While not strictly sequels, there are also some exciting remakes and new entries to existing franchises that fans have their eyes on. Konami’s iconic Silent Hill franchise will receive a new entry in September this year in the form of Silent Hill: Townfall. Atlus is set to release their second Persona remake project with Persona 4 Revival on February 18, 2027, just two days after Santa Monica Studios drops the newest entry in the God of War saga, God of War Laufey. Capcom’s cult classic Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is getting the remake treatment too, and a brand new entry to the developer’s Mega Man franchise, Mega Man Dual Override, is in development and due out next year.
