Who Is Madelyne Pryor?

To know Madelyne Pryor’s story is to know a tale of stolen agency. Her character arc into someone possessing independence and autonomy has been slow throughout the decades, but recently the comics have allowed her a chance to shine (so to speak) with her Dark X-Men. Plus, she’s also been instated as the Queen of Limbo. Whether that was a good or bad choice remains to be seen.

However, Madelyne’s story starts right after Jean’s apparent death via the Phoenix. Cyclops is devastated and has lost all hope in the X-Men’s mission. But a new woman in his life lifts him from the depths of despair. Extremely smart, long red hair … somehow the details did not add up for Scott Summers. He fell in love with Maddie Pryor and they had a baby together, Nathan Summers. Of course, family matters can never be simple or easy for an X-Man.

Mr. Sinister Steps In

Where there’s a Summers family member, Mr. Sinister is never too far behind. His obsession with this family’s genetics is textbook psychotic. Sadly, Maddie Pryor would endure the brunt of his torture. As it so happened, Maddie was a clone of Jean Grey, engineered to ensnare Scott Summers and produce a mutant baby with prolific potential. Cable, AKA baby Nathan, certainly lived up to this prophecy, but Maddie would suffer for years.

When Jean resurfaced, Scott returned to New York City with no hesitation and formed the X-Factor team. Left behind, Maddie was heartbroken. She also fell victim to a plot by Sinister to crash her plane and abduct Nathan. Still feeling abandoned by the X-Men, even amid her child’s abduction, Maddie was pulled in by the promise of power. With the help of demons from Limbo, she became the Goblin Queen and turned New York City into a hellish inferno of rage and revenge. Since then, Maddie has always struggled with issues of self-identity and belonging.
