Star Wars: Who and What Are the Inquisitors?

The Inquisitors are primary antagonists in the new Star Wars™ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi™. They are deadly wielders of the dark side who are intent on hunting down all remaining or burgeoning Jedi™. But who are the Inquisitors? And why do they want to eradicate the light side of the Force?

Below, let’s break down the history of this group, as well as the origins and motivations of the most important Inquisitors in Star Wars.

The Grand Inquisitor

Star Wars: Rebels

The Grand Inquisitor™ is a dangerous adversary. He appears first in Star Wars: Rebels after following orders to hunt down Kanan Jarrus™ and Ezra Bridger™. As his title suggests, he is the highest ranking Inquisitor. Thus he is also the strongest Inquisitor and the most trusted by Darth Vader™ and Lord Sidious™. The Grand Inquisitor is also extremely skilled at lightsaber combat, besting our Jedi protagonists multiple times. This is because he studies temple records and Jedi fighting techniques.

Eventually the Grand Inquistor dies during an altercation with Kanan Jarrus. Later, however, the Inquisitor’s spirit appears to Kanan during a visit to an ancient Jedi Temple. Here it is revealed that prior to the Jedi Purge™, the Grand Inquisitor was a Temple Guardian. This explains his nearly unrivaled skills and connection to the Force, as well as making his fall to the dark side that much sadder.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars: Rebels and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi take place roughly around the same time period. Thus the Grand Inquisitor’s death in Rebels does not stop him from appearing in the newest live-action Star Wars show. We expect him to be an equally brutal opponent.

Seventh Sister

Star Wars: Rebels

Slightly insane and insanely cruel, the Seventh Sister specializes in hunting Force-sensitive children. Notably she uses her ID-9 seeker droids™ to assist. After basic reconnaissance, she then abducts these children from their parents. Although she is thwarted in the Rebels series, it is implied the children are either executed or taken to become Inquisitors.

The Seventh Sister’s merciless attitude gains her a reputation and commendations that line her up for a promotion to Grand Inquisitor after the other Grand Inquisitor’s death. However, Maul™ slays the Seventh Sister on Malachor™ before she can achieve her goal.

Fifth Brother

Star Wars: Rebels

In Rebels, the Fifth Brother is strong-willed and stoic. While he is not ranked as high as the other Inquisitors, he is still dispatched on crucial missions and entrusted with crushing key Rebel cells. The Fifth Brother often seems slow to act, but truthfully he is more calculating and prefers to plan rather than impulsively attack. Like his counterpart the Seventh Sister, the Fifth Brother perishes by Maul’s hands.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Of course, the timeline of Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi allows the Fifth Brother a second chance onscreen. In the trailers he is seen leading stormtrooper™ battalions during his hunt. While it’s unclear whether every single Inquisitor will be going after Ob-Wan Kenobi, it’s safe to assume they would be — especially considering the large group sent after the Ghost crew in Rebels.

Trilla Sudari / Second Sister

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Trilla Sudari™ is one of the most tragic Star Wars villains to date. And this is because her backstory, revealed through the video game Jedi: Fallen Order, explores the deeper complications and monstrosities associated with the creation of Inquisitors. Previously, the Star Wars television series did little to explain these Jedi hunters. The Inquisitors used the dark side, wielded red lightsabers, and answered to Darth Vader. They seemed to be ordinary antagonists.

But in Jedi: Fallen Order, the Second Sister™ demonstrates an Inquisitor’s lack of free will. During Order 66™ — the Jedi Purge — Trilla’s Master can’t protect her Padawan™ from being taken. As a child, Trilla is taken to the planet Nur™ where she is tortured both physically and psychologically. Her mind is turned against the light side while her body is fashioned into a weapon. After, she sees her captors as her allies and the Jedi as her enemies.

As the Second Sister, Trilla is cruel and ambitious. She is extremely powerful and enjoys making other beings suffer. Eventually, however, she is reunited with her Master through the actions of the game’s protagonist, young Jedi Cal Kestis™. Turning back toward the light, Trilla duels Darth Vader. While she is ultimately slain by the Sith Lord™, her sacrifice allows Cal to escape.

Reva / Third Sister

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Little is known about Reva so far. She is ranked highly as an Inquisitor — below only the Second Sister and Grand Inquisitor. By the currently released footage alone, we know she is ruthless, cunning, and capable. She is in command of the search for Obi-Wan. But how did she come to be an Inquisitor, and one so influential at that? Her backstory could be as harrowing as Trilla’s. We hope to find out over the course of Obi-Wan Kenobi, streaming May 27 on Disney+.
