The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Ahoy, mateys. You’re tuned in to a slow atmospheric buildup, with ongoing radio narration from DJ Stevie Wayne. Her witching hour broadcast (complete with weather reports), helps set the dismal, Poe-esque scene for this cult classic. From horror legend John Carpenter, and featuring scream queens Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis, The Fog perfectly encapsulates late-’70s horror. Foggy silhouettes, sailor zombies, and more supernatural suspense certainly make this sleepy town’s 100th anniversary one to remember.

The Abyss

James Cameron sure does love his submersibles. The Abyss captures the crushing paranoia of deep-sea diving that one would expect. It’s pretty easy to let the pressure get to you. In this sci-fi thriller, everything is really just sinking and sliding and flooding the whole time. Oh, and there’s a hurricane! As if that weren’t enough, this submarine graveyard attracts the attention of mysterious, bioluminescent beings. Like in Avatar, a team of scientists clashes with the military on how to deal with unknown creatures. But the real question is, why is there always somebody in a cowboy hat?

Deep Rising

Once you get past the waterlogged layers of mercenary machismo and quaint ’90s computer tech, Deep Rising is a fun action romp in the South China Sea. After all, it’s directed by Stephen Sommers, who also gave us The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, among many others. In addition, the film stars Famke Janssen (Jean Grey and also a lethal Bond Girl), with a supporting but memorable appearance by Djimon Hounsou (another Marvel and DC mainstay). If Titanic wasn’t convincing enough to never go on a cruise, let the very first kill of this movie — death by suction through a toilet — be the only warning you ever need. And remember, when faced with overgrown deep-sea worms, just find the nearest sea doo.

Lake Placid

It’s not all about sharks in the ocean! And you’d do well to remember that still waters run deep … especially when there are reptilian monsters hungry for human flesh. Somehow, a larger-than-life crocodile has found a home in Maine. And, as to be expected, a super-sized semiaquatic beast is bound to cause chaos wherever it surfaces. There’s laughs, there’s chomping, and there’s plenty of explosions. What else could you want?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Set sail for fantasy drenched in swashbuckling action and terrible tales of treasure. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise of course takes place at sea, so it’s no wonder those waves wash up every writhing, wriggling creature imaginable. However, the most feared fishy fiend is none other than Davy Jones — you know, the one with the locker? He seeks a debt from Jack Sparrow and will stop at nothing to acquire it, even in the face of the Kraken. Plus, that tentacle beard is quite stylish.

Hey, you know what sounds like a great idea? Putting yourself in a cage and lowering that cage into shark-infested waters. Yeah! It’s not like there’s a whole movie about sharks that eat … oh, wait. I guess nobody told these two sisters about Jaws. For this thrill-seeking pair, a malfunctioning cage is only the beginning. And by the time you reach the ending, you’ll be questioning everything.
