Learn More About Coffin Comics’ Vengeful Vigilante La Muerta

By Jasmine Edwards on Mar 13, 2025

La Muerta is Coffin Comics’ vengeful vigilante character. She wields dual pistols, her preferred weapons — though she’s great in hand-to-hand combat, as well. La Muerta wears a two-piece costume: black leggings and a black crop top, each adorned with a white skeletal pattern. This outfit matches her white face paint, which is styled after the calaveras that adorn altars during the DĂa de los Muertos holiday.

However, Maria Diaz wasn’t always the angry woman you see on the comic cover above. Read on below to see how Maria Diaz became the antihero capable of protecting her city … in whatever way she deems necessary.

Maria Diaz / La Muerta

Maria Diaz served in the United States military, fighting in Afghanistan. When she returned home, all she desired was a quiet, peaceful life away from violence or bloodshed. She reunited with her family during the Mexican holiday DĂa de los Muertos — Day of the Dead in English. However, that fateful night, Maria also discovered her brother’s connection to a notorious, death-worshipping crime cartel. Led by Mama Z, the Zavalas slaughtered the entire Diaz family.

Although Maria ultimately survived the attack, she spent eight months in a coma. When she awoke, she swore to avenge her family by sending the Zavalas to the afterlife … even at the cost of her own soul. With her humanity on the line, Maria dares the impossible: to wage a bloody one-woman war against a powerful crime cartel as La Muerta.

Mistaken Identity

In Mexico City, a ruthless killer paints her face and picks off the criminal elite. But although this redhead wears La Muerta’s infamous skull face, she is not Maria Diaz. Prompted to learn more about this murderer and what motivates her, as well as clear her own name of those crimes, La Muerta goes gun-to-gun with her copycat.

“Roja” turns out to be a martial arts expert and cold-blooded assassin. Trained as a living weapon from a young age, Roja utilizes a machete and rifle to brutally punish anyone who gets in her way. When she encounters La Muerta, Roja decides to eliminate this threat. After all, La Muerta is the only other person capable of matching Roja’s abilities in combat.

Santa Muerte

Santa Muerte, the Saint of Death, calls upon Maria Diaz to serve as an instrument of war and vengeance. Maria heeds the call as La Muerta in order to seek justice for a murdered child. But La Muerta’s talents have earned her plenty of enemies. She contends with multiple powerful antagonists, including the supernatural entity La Llorona as well as a criminal mastermind called Brujo. Faced with these unstoppable forces, La Muerta enlists the assistance of the luchador vigilante Loco. But what terrible price will she pay for the sake of retribution?

Forbidden Magic

As her heroics continue, La Muerta becomes further entangled with magic. An evil spell revives Maria’s old enemy from the grave. Her city suddenly turns against her as the criminal underworld gains strength and support. The vigilante must fight like hell in order to avoid joining her adversaries in Hell.
