Son of Batman shows, through Esposito’s Ra’s al Ghul, the profound impact that family continues to have on Batman and the man behind the mask.

5. Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn

Who said super-villains can’t have a sense of humor? Esposito captures Lex Luthor’s devious nature while also allowing the audience a chance to laugh at the way one man can use his wealth and influence to control basically everything. Under Luthor’s watchful eye, the Legion of Doom might draw the line at Dr. Psycho’s potty mouth but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to disorganized villainy — even when headed by Superman’s archenemy. It’s fun to watch Luthor, a self-made success and absolute perfectionist, struggle with the ineptitude of his fellow super-villains.

4. Antón Castillo, Far Cry 6

Once again, Esposito taps into a villainous character who is corrupted by the immense pressure of family legacies. In the video game Far Cry 6, Esposito plays Antón Castillo, also known as El Presidente, the dictator of a Caribbean country called Yara. His own father failed the country decades before, losing his leadership to a guerilla revolution, so Antón resolves to do better and ensure his son Diego is primed to follow in his footsteps. Of course, a dictatorship never goes long without opposition, but Esposito brings compelling depth to Yara’s doomed despot.

3. Stan Edgar, The Boys

Stan Edgar is a calm and collected foe in The Boys. His level-headed personality and behind-the-scenes puppet mastery juxtapose him greatly against the impulsive, dramatic, and camera-hungry Homelander. Having worked his way up from associate to CEO, Mr. Edgar is clearly ambitious and gets what he wants for himself and the company, no matter the cost. The man has been known to bury dirty secrets about Vought International’s shady dealings and kill count. So while his character is strong — as he’s one of the only people who will stand up to the Supes — his moral compass is not.

2. Moff Gideon, Star Wars: The Mandalorian

As the galaxy recovered from the iron grip of the Empire, there still remained factions that were devoted to upholding the Emperor’s horrific tyranny. Moff Gideon™ was one such remnant, a man who sought to inflict order upon a galaxy flailing in its lack of structure. This fearsome Imperial officer also played a part in the Great Purge of Mandalore™, the tragic genocide of The Mandalorian’s™ homeworld. From this conquest, Gideon even managed to win ownership of the Darksaber, a Mandalorian weapon that signified a claim to Mandalore’s throne. Eventually, Din Djarin™ defeated Moff Gideon and rescued Grogu™ — though it remains to be seen whether Gideon’s villainy is over yet.

1. Gustavo Fring, Breaking Bad

Sometimes the most dangerous antagonist is one who is outwardly peaceful. You’d never know the rage brewing inside were it not for the secret vendetta that pushes them forward. As Breaking Bad grew in popularity, so did Esposito’s character Gustavo Fring, a Chilean drug lord who works for the Mexican cartel. At first, however, the owner of Los Pollos Hermanos is a menacing figure whose calculated nature opposes Walt and Jesse’s haphazard operations. Gustavo is the type of antagonist that chills your spine with his cold, calm delivery — which is exactly why fans wanted more.

Through Better Call Saul, Gus’ character received more of a backstory. In Breaking Bad, Gus had proven he was more than capable of navigating the shadowy branches of the Mexican cartel. But his deep grudge against the cartel went back to the murder of Gus’ partner, Max Arciniega. In addition to their business partnership with Los Pollos Hermanos, Gus and Max were together romantically and the loss of his partner drove Gus to become the coldhearted killer that drew audiences in right from the start. Nothing like heartbreak to really twist a person into their most volatile, dangerous self.
