Gotham City is eternally plagued by criminal masterminds and super-villains who are hellbent on taking control for their own gains. And it goes without saying that Batman is the city’s eternal guardian, the Dark Knight who defends it from evil.

On the other hand, Batman has fallen on many occasions at the hands of his enemies. Even his crime-fighting companion, Robin, has either moved on from Gotham or been needed elsewhere. In these cases, who’s left to defend the city from its tormentors? These are the top 10 defenders of Gotham from DC comics.

Birds of Prey

Aside from the Batman Family itself, Gotham City’s most well-known super hero group is definitely the Birds of Prey. This group of seemingly random heroines has managed to reform wayward vigilantes as well as give a home to crimefighters whose strength might have been undervalued elsewhere.

Originally, the Birds of Prey consisted of Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress. Over the years, other members like Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Vixen, Lady Blackhawk, and other prominent women have all served as Birds of Prey. The current lineup is Black Canary, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Harley Quinn, Big Barda, and Zealot of the WILDcats — plus a future version of a Gotham Academy student now known as Meridian.

The Batgirls (Barbara + Stephanie + Cassandra)

The Batman Family is always growing and changing, and the mantle of Batgirl has belonged to quite a few heroines. After moving into her role as Oracle, Barbara Gordon passed off the name to Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, who themselves have grown into a formidable best friend duo. Together, they’re balanced pretty perfectly.

Stephanie, formerly Spoiler, is spontaneous, inventive, and occasionally rash. She’s also witty and proficient in engineering. Steph is great at empathizing with people and bonds easily with others. Cassandra, on the other hand, doesn’t say much — but she lets her actions do the talking. As the daughter of assassins who was deprived of human connection in an effort to make her a better killer, Cassandra has incredible observational skills that let her practically predict her opponent’s moves.

Batwoman

While the name has been used by several different characters across continuities, the first hero people think of under the Batwoman cowl is Kate Kane. Katherine Rebecca “Kate” Kane is a cousin to Bruce Wayne, being the niece of his mother. She’s a woman of Jewish descent and is perhaps one of the most prominent lesbian super heroes in modern comics.

Her military background informs her attitude towards vigilantism, being both the daughter of soldiers and a former Brigade Tactical Officer. Where Batman refuses to use guns, she doesn’t mind them. Kate views her heroics like military service — following an ideal more than an individual, in the case of borrowing the Bat-Symbol. She’s loyal but independent, unafraid to use lethal force if necessary.

Ghost-Maker

Now, this vigilante is a recent addition to Gotham — and actually, he’s not even from the city at all! However, Minhkhoa Khan and Bruce Wayne share a lot of history, going back to training together under an agent from the League of Assassins.

Eventually when Minhkhoa, AKA Ghost-Maker, determines that Bruce has failed his city, he steps in to help defend Gotham from The Joker’s mayhem. Ghost-Maker views crimefighting as an art rather than an obligation. With skills in hacking, martial arts, and acrobatics, Minhkhoa proves a difficult enemy to villains and other vigilantes alike.

Jason Todd, AKA Red Hood

Deep, horrific trauma is essentially (and sadly) almost a pre-requisite for a top spot in the Batman Family. Few DC characters can lay claim to this membership requirement quite like Jason Todd does. He was famously murdered by The Joker, but that didn’t end his involvement with Gotham City crime.

After his resurrection, Jason came back with a very different approach than his training with Batman taught him. Rather than the title of Robin, he operates under The Joker’s old moniker: Red Hood. Jason has no qualms about using guns in his quest for vengeance. Plus, he’s a bit more ruthless than his fellow Batman Family members. Can you blame him?

Tim Drake, AKA Red Robin

If you’re still seeing red, that’s because Tim Drake just zoomed by. As the third Robin to take up the mantle, Tim follows in Batman’s detective footsteps. He was present the night Dick Grayson’s parents died, and even managed to discover Batman and the original Robin’s secret identities. Tim was convinced to step in and aid a spiraling Batman after the tragic loss of Jason Todd.

Tim Drake is one of the sidekicks most similar to Batman in skill and training. In addition to traditional and esoteric martial arts styles, he has a genius IQ and speaks multiple languages. He had exhibited strong leadership skills over the years, and even earned the respect of Ra’s al Ghul.

Duke Thomas, AKA The Signal

While many members of the Batman Family possess no innate superpowers, Duke Thomas is a teenage metahuman with the ability to absorb and manipulate both light and shadow. This is known as photokinesis. It gives him photo-sensory abilities like his light-tracking “Ghost Vision” as well as X-ray vision and telescopic vision. He first joined the vigilante fight during the We Are Robin era, but eventually took on his own heroic mantle.

He trains under Batman and becomes The Signal. Duke heroically defends Gotham in the daytime, contrary to traditional Batman Family operations. Being a former Robin gang member, he has allies across the city and sometimes recruits them into missions.

Damian Wayne, AKA Robin

Damian Wayne is the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, herself the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul. However, Damian’s existence was kept secret for a time, trained by the League of Assassins in hopes of disrupting Batman’s crimefighting and becoming heir to Wayne Enterprises. He is seen as violent, gifted, a bit coddled, and occasionally misguided in his morals.

However, with paternal guidance from Batman, Damian does become a hero in the Batman Family tradition. During the events of the Lazarus Planet series, he is integral in saving the world. He proves highly motivated by a desire to help and protect his father. By this point in his journey, he fully recognizes the strength that Batman and Robin have as a team.

Lucius Fox’s Children

The Fox family has long been tied to the Wayne family, both as business partners and trusted allies. Lucius is the business manager of Wayne Enterprises but also helps Batman with his equipment acquisitions. The children of Lucius Fox are a whole other level of dedicated to Batman’s cause, however.

In fact, three out of four Fox children work within the Batman Family network. Luke is the second Batwing and uses a suit created by his father, formerly exiled Jace uses the Batman mantle while operating in New York City, and youngest daughter Tiffany is an up-and-coming vigilante who has even used the name Batgirl before.

Bao Pham, AKA Clownhunter

Clownhunter, AKA Bao Pham, is another product of the Joker War. Like many citizens, Bao was terrorized by The Joker and his forces, even witnessing the death of his parents in the Narrows. Something in Bao finally snapped. He decided he wouldn’t take the torture any longer. His city would stop living in fear of a bunch of street clowns.

Patrolling the streets with his weapon the Bat-bat (a baseball bat with a Batarang embedded in the end), Clownhunter went so far as to try to eliminate Harley Quinn on his own. So long as The Joker and his clowns lurk in the shadows of the city, Bao Pham is prepared to put an end to their laughter.
