Sideshow Featured Collector Dio Ortigas
Location: Quezon City, Philippines
Collecting for me has been life changing is so many ways. As far as I can remember I’ve been collecting as early as 5 years old. My favorite hero remains to be Batman. I recall holding on to my Batman (1989) VHS tape everywhere I go. My mom had to buy me sets of Batman costumes to wear because I just wouldn’t take off the only one I had for days.
Working at a collectibles shop, I’ve met a lot of great people through this hobby. Shared a lot of moments and and learned things I would never have being somewhere else. Collecting also brought out the photographer in me. I couldn’t stand being the only person to appreciate my collection. Just like everyone else I wanted to give people an exclusive look through that window of fascinating things. It is with my pleasure to take my time to shoot and compose my photos for most collectors or anyone to see.
As a toy photographer and enthusiast, I feel it to be my self proclaimed duty to exploit that main aspect and showcase why they’re so great. For Hot Toys I love the realism and uncanny resemblance the figures have over the real actors. As a regular movie going person this line of collectibles stuck to me real quick and has been ever since. Sideshow on the other hand easily makes the best comic book related sculptures available to display. I have the 89 Batman Premium Format Figure standing along side my 1989 VHS in display as a homage of a sort.
If I were to leave any advice to any aspiring or established collectors its that principle I stand close by. Keep collecting what looks good to you. Regardless of price or hype. At the end of it all what really matters is pleasing yourself and having something close to you that resonates the deepest. Passion was never about being in trend, its doing what you believe is beautiful to your own eyes. It’s that one characteristic that makes you respect another collector for what they love.
