Get Ready for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4

Soon, it’ll be time to report for duty aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. The penultimate season of NuTrek’s greatest series (in my humble opinion) will bless us with 10 episodes of the best crew in Starfleet boldly traveling to new frontiers, going on whirlwind escapades, falling in love, and turning into puppets (probably not all in the same episode, though).

Before the show returns on July 23, though, let’s dive into everything you need to know about season 4 (and a brief recap of season 3, for good measure). Energize!

The Out-of-This-World Plot

The creative team has understandably kept details for season 4 under lock and key, beyond the broader plot strokes shown in the official teasers and trailer. That said, here’s a synopsis per Paramount:

“In season 4 of the Paramount+ Original Series, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise – led by Captain Christopher Pike – embark on a series of thrilling and emotional adventures across the stars. As they journey to strange new worlds, they will battle inner demons and external threats, encounter colorful new characters, reunite with familiar faces, and confront terrifying aliens. Through it all, they strive to embrace a bright, hopeful future.”

The first-look teaser from last year shows the Enterprise crew responding to a Mayday from a buoy from within a stellar storm. After the storm knocks out the ship’s power, Pike and our intrepid crew embark on a mission to a … wait for it … strange new world to obtain iridium to get the systems back online.

What else is in store for season 4?

In another teaser, the gang travels to a world with dinosaurs. (A Jurassic world, perhaps? I’ll see myself out.) There’s also a shot of them in said teaser dressed in Western garb, galloping across a galactic desert wasteland. (Hey, Star Trek: The Original Series had a Western-themed episode in which Captain Kirk and his landing party partook in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Ridin’ horses and shootin’ guns is classic Trek.)

We’re also going to get more Spock/Kirk bonding scenes, which makes sense, given that we’re moving closer to the beginning of The Original Series, when Kirk inevitably takes over the Enterprise. The trailer also sees Dr. M’Benga talking to Pike about the latter’s past and future, noting that Pike has thought about both a great deal. Unfortunately, we’re also moving closer to Pike’s unavoidable – and tragic – fate.

The official trailer also features what looks like a dragon breathing fire on our favorite vessel, La’An fighting off armored knights with swords, and Scotty kissing a new Vulcan crewmember. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what to expect this season. Based on the footage out there in the geeky ether, we’re in for a wild ride that boldly goes where no human has gone before.

The Season 4 Episode Titles

The Strange New Worlds social media accounts unveiled the episode titles for season 4, which are as follows:

Episode 1: “Valles Marineris”
Episode 2: “The Griffin Incident”
Episode 3: “Human Best Friend”
Episode 4: “A Case of Chiaroscuro”
Episode 5: “Level-Five Transporter Accident”
Episode 6: “Off-Hour”
Episode 7: “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass”
Episode 8: “Orders of Magnitude”
Episode 9: “Once La’An a Time”
Episode 10: “Tomorrow’s Enterprise”

The series has also teased a puppet-themed episode, and methinks it might be “The Griffin Incident” or “Level-Five Transporter Accident.” “Human Best Friend” could be a Spock/Kirk-heavy one. “Once La’An a Time” is most likely related to the scene of La’An brawling with knights. Perhaps she gets stuck in the Middle Ages on Earth or on a medieval-esque planet.

“Tomorrow’s Enterprise” could give our crew a glimpse of the future with Kirk at the helm (or Pike will get promoted to fleet captain and pass the baton to Kirk). “Valles Marineris” is a nod to the canyon system on Mars, which is the largest in our solar system. Will the Enterprise land on the Red Planet?

The Energizing Cast

You can expect our core players to return for Strange New Worlds’ exciting fourth season. Anson Mount leads the charge as Captain Christopher Pike.

The rest of the main cast includes Rebecca Romijn as Lt. Cmdr. Una Chin-Riley, AKA Number One, Ethan Peck as Lt. Spock, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as Lt. La’An Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Ensign Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M’Benga, and Martin Quinn as Lt. Montgomery Scott. Carol Kane and Paul Wesley will guest star as Commander Pelia and Lt. Cmdr. James T. Kirk, respectively.

What Happened Last Season on the Enterprise?

While most episodes are standalone in this series, there were a handful of narrative throughlines in Strange New Worlds season 3. For starters, Pike’s girlfriend, Captain Marie Batel, survived infection from Gorn eggs in the season 2 finale. However, said survival required her DNA to be hybridized with the Gorn. The alteration to Batel’s DNA became even more apparent when the Vezda, an ancient extradimensional lifeform, took control of Ensign Gamble’s body.

The season concluded with Batel embracing her destiny, but not before she and Pike lived out their lives in a vision courtesy of the Beholder statue on Vadia IX. She then became said Beholder statue, tasked with guarding the Vezda prison there for eternity. Talk about intense.

Meanwhile, Spock reckoned with Chapel moving on from him with Dr. Roger Korby. It’s okay, though, because he and La’An embarked on a “friends with benefits” journey together. Uhura also began dating Ortegas’ brother, Beto. Ortegas overcame her trauma from the beginning of the season during the Gorn attack, and it took getting stranded on a toxic moon for that to happen.

A mission gone awry also transformed some of the crew into Vulcans. In another episode, La’An tested out a prototype holodeck with a fictional mystery story in which she, a detective, must solve a murder case. (That one is a ton of fun.)

Potential Guest Stars Beaming Up This Season (or the Next)

Press for Strange New Worlds has remained tight-lipped regarding who else we’ll see aboard the Enterprise this season. We know that seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back-to-back. Joe Morton appears in one of the trailers, and it looks like he’s playing a Starfleet admiral. A new female Vulcan cadet, played by Bianca Nugara, will also join the Enterprise crew this season (she’s kissing Scotty in the trailer). Dan Jeannotte will return as Lt. Sam Kirk based on a season 4 first-look photo. Perhaps the Kirk brothers are getting more screen time together. David Marcus, Kirk’s son, is purportedly appearing in season 4. He would be a toddler at this point.

Additionally, James Frain’s Sarek, Spock’s father, is rumored to turn up in season 4 or season 5, and Patton Oswalt, who portrayed Doug the Vulcan in season 3, spoke about reprising his role on Conan O’Brien’s podcast. As for the former, we’ve only seen Sarek on Star Trek: Discovery, so it would be lovely to have him cross over to this series.
