Happy Galentine’s Day! It’s important to celebrate and elevate female friendships in all their colors and textures, and there’s no better medium to explore them than the supernatural/horror space. Genre TV allows for nuanced, layered exploration, often using larger-than-life elements to illuminate the complexities of the ties that bind us.

Since Galentine’s Day falls on Friday the 13th this year, here are 10 supernatural-themed friendships worth celebrating (even among all the vampires, serial killers, and world-ending chaos).

Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Let’s face it – Buffy and Willow are the blueprint in terms of friendships in genre TV. It ain’t easy maintaining close bonds when battling baddies on the daily in Sunnydale, California, especially when you’re the Chosen One. However, Willow never left Buffy’s side throughout Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s seven seasons, and vice versa.

They’re also proof positive that opposites attract. Perhaps it helps that they don’t have typical high schooler concerns; their problems fall into the “life or death” camp. That certainly puts things into perspective. It’s easy to keep your friends close when you all share common ground: saving the world. Be sure to beep Buffy and Willow when the apocalypse comes.

Tara Thornton and Sookie Stackhouse – True Blood

Bon Temps is a small town, and in HBO’s True Blood, it becomes a supernatural hub. Childhood friends Tara and Sookie are embroiled in that otherworldly chaos, smack dab in the middle of it all. Their friendship ebbs and flows aplenty over the course of the series, but through it all, the love between them never fades.

Both, but especially Tara, are fiercely protective of each other, even though one is a formidable vampire and the other a powerful halfling. Their loyalty in the face of the everyday horror show in Bon Temps is beyond admirable. Despite the incessant external threats to their relationship, that loyalty never wavers.

Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland – Wicked

They have been changed for good … because they knew each other. Wicked’s Elphaba and Glinda cling tightly to the fraying thread of their friendship, no thanks to the outside forces hellbent on tearing them apart. What starts as “loathing, unadulterated loathing” transforms into a deep-seated bond that transcends college roommates. Glinda also supports Elphaba, as the latter stands up for what she believes in, even if Glinda herself feels conflicted about her dear Elphie’s convictions.

Even though those outside forces win, it’s abundantly clear that the love Glinda and Elphaba share will never die. It’s an enviable relationship, to be sure – the kind of connection we all crave.

Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair – Wednesday

Wednesday and Enid are the true definition of “odd couple.” In Netflix’s Wednesday, Enid’s sunny disposition initially struggles to break through Wednesday’s rain cloud personality, but by the end of season 1, they’re thick as thieves. It says a lot that the titular Addams girl refuses to tolerate anyone else with a demeanor similar to Enid’s. Only her favorite wolf will do.

Their friendship is utterly adorable. Neither tries to change the other in any way, and save a few unintentional mistakes, they try not to overstep each other’s boundaries. At Nevermore Academy, anything can happen, and it’s crucial to have a ride-or-die in case you, well, die. Long live Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair.

Sam and Tara Carpenter – Scream

Maternal half-siblings Sam and Tara Carpenter manage to outlive Ghost Face not once but twice in the Scream franchise. There’s nothing quite like surviving a serial killer multiple times that deepens a sisterly friendship. Like any relationship, Tara and Sam’s dynamic is a bit strained, but sometimes the most complex bonds harbor the purest love.

Sam and Tara defy the odds to be the last ones standing, working together like a well-oiled machine to dupe Ghost Face. Through it all, they are two halves of a whole. Here’s hoping they can live out the rest of their lives free of knife-wielding murderers.

Taissa Turner and Shauna Shipman – Yellowjackets

This particular pairing is as complex as they come. Taissa and Shauna don’t develop their friendship until they’re stranded in the Canadian wilderness in Yellowjackets. Well, it’s more like a trauma bond, if we’re being honest. Taissa quickly becomes Shauna’s rock after learning that she’s pregnant, while Shauna helps Taissa grapple with her dangerous sleepwalking. After Jackie’s death, Taissa once again steps up to support the grieving Shauna and remains steadfastly by her side when she gives birth.

Unfortunately, Shauna’s rise to Antler Queen in season 3 drives a wedge between her and Taissa, and their relationship is rocky at best in the present-day timeline. At least we’ll always have the first two seasons of Taissauna (Shaunissa?) to watch on repeat.

Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley – Scooby-Doo

Jinkies! This iconic Scooby-Doo pairing has been around for decades, transitioning from animation to live action and beyond. Nothing solidifies a friendship more than solving supernatural mysteries with your gang in a groovy minivan. Like any duo worth its salt, they’re quite different, and that works to their advantage.

Unsurprisingly, they’re smarter than their male counterparts, and without Daphne and Velma, Mystery Inc. wouldn’t exist. Here’s to the ladies who never shy away from meddling in the name of unmasking the bad guys.

In The Vampire Diaries, Mystic Falls is the epicenter for vampiric chaos, with Elena Gilbert, Bonnie Bennett, and Caroline Forbes getting sucked into its vortex. This trio are best friends through thick and thin, even when mercurial vampires serve as a hot and non-sparkly distraction.

While their collective journey eventually diverges into three separate footpaths, these three will always love each other. At the end of the day, what else is there but love?

Sabrina Spellman and Roz Walker – Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

What happens when a witch and a seer become best friends? Sabrina and Roz of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina turn Greendale (no, not that Greendale) upside down as two powerful beings tangled in a web of unspeakable horror. Initially, Roz is unaware that Sabrina is a witch, but when she develops her latent seeing abilities, she has a vision of the latter’s true form.

Thankfully, this big secret doesn’t derail their friendship. It’s clear that they’re stuck together like glue regardless of what happens … even though Sabrina’s biological father is the Lucifer Morningstar. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

Dana and Em Cypress – Revival

Revival Day leaves a crater of an impact in the sleepy town of Wausau, Wisconsin, with sisters Dana and Em Cypress reeling from said impact. Well, Em more so because she’s a Reviver. After Dana learns of her younger sister’s murder and resurrection, she fights tooth and nail to unravel the mystery of Em’s death. Their relationship is heartwarming and sweet, and they’re loyal to each other above all else.

When Em sacrifices herself in the season 1 finale to save Dana, the latter assumes her sister is gone. Thankfully, in a shocking plot twist, we see that Em survived in the episode’s final moments. Here’s hoping we get Revival season 2 so our dynamic duo can finally take that much-needed beach vacation.
