Top 5 Most Powerful Members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants
Sometimes to understand where you stand, you have to find what it is that you stand against. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants found their purpose by uncovering what they truly hate: Professor X. And not just Professor X, but the way that he protects humans, even at the cost of mutant lives. His soft approach of coexistence isn’t enough for them.
The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants stands for the protection and survival of mutants no matter the cost. And they stand to oppose the X-Men no matter what. There have been many members in this organization of antagonists, but some stand out above the rest.
Here are the top 5 most powerful members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and why they chose to oppose Professor X.
Erik Lehnsherr is one of the many names of Magneto. As a young boy, he was held in the concentration camps in Nazi Germany, where he was tortured specifically because of his mutant powers. His captors wanted to use his power, but he vowed to never be controlled by weak humans again.
Even though Magneto has at times worked side by side with Charles, he simply has no patience for Professor X’s dream to coexist. He knows that mutants are the most evolved and the most capable species on the planet. Professor X just gets in his way when he tries to take control or even just protect mutants in a more radical manner. And so, he formed the Brother of Evil Mutants specifically to counter and oppose the X-Men.
Raven Darkhölme is a shapeshifting mutant who can change her appearance and voice to match any person she has ever seen. She is the mother of Nightcrawler, and the adoptive mother of Rogue. It’s interesting that both of her children are X-Men. In fact, even Mystique has been a part of the X-Men team in the past.
Her allegiance changes constantly in the comics. She has run the X-Men, and she has controlled the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Wherever Mystique is, she serves herself and does whatever she thinks is best at that moment. It makes sense that someone with her powers would be so mercurial and willing to change sides so frequently.
Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth, is a ruthless killer and product of the Weapon X program just like Wolverine. In fact, he’s as old as Wolverine, and bears many of the same powers, like an extraordinary healing factor. While Wolverine tries to rise above his animalistic nature, Sabretooth embraces it.
That means that for the majority of his life, Sabretooth has had an insatiable bloodlust. He’s been a serial killer, especially when he was hired as an assassin for the US government. He is happy to oppose Professor X, because he doesn’t want peace. He wants blood.
Juggernaut, Cain Marko, is actually not even a mutant. In fact, he gets his strength from the ever-powerful Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, which is connected to a powerful cosmic entity. His overwhelming power makes him literally an unstoppable force, strong enough to barrel through any barrier. He has been a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants more than once.
And even before he gained his powers, or knew about mutants, Juggernaut hated Charles Xavier. Charles happens to be Cain’s step-brother, and his biological father preferred Charles over him. Juggernaut resented him, and vowed to destroy him and his miserable X-Men team, too.
Emma Frost is a one of the most powerful telepaths in the world, even able to defeat Charles Xavier himself in a mental battle. Not only that, but she is able to turn her skin into a practically indestructible diamond-like material. She is a shrewd businesswoman, and treats life like a business – she is always looking for power and influence to get what she wants.
Just like Mystique, Emma Frost has fought beside Charles Xavier in the X-Men and fought against him in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. It depends on the story, and it depends on what she wants. She has the power to operate Cerebro, and she has used Cerebro to help the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attack the X-Mansion and destroy the passive X-Men along with it.
Every single one of these mutants has worked with Professor X in some capacity. Every single one of them has helped in X-Men on one occasion or another. So why do they oppose him? Why is it that they insist on calling themselves (in some iterations) The Brotherhood of EVIL Mutants?
The Watcher, Uatu, once explained that Magneto’s decision to call his organization The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants had nothing to do with being evil. Instead, it enforces the idea that Charles Xavier has to be absolutely good, and forces him into a moral absolute. And because of that, Magneto can manipulate Professor X. That is truly evil.
