Which Fine Art Print Format is Right for Your Collection?
Since the days of crayon drawings attached to the fridge with magnets, hanging artwork in our homes has always been in fashion. Of course, when it’s your turn to decide how to decorate, you may want to opt for a slightly more durable and detailed medium to spotlight your favorite art pieces.
Sideshow’s Art Prints Program brings you high-quality wall art from renowned and highly sought-after artists, celebrating all your favorite pop culture properties. Still, deciding on the best format of artwork for your collection is an important part of the process. Sideshow works with archival materials and cutting-edge print technologies to bring you a wide array of art styles and presentations to fit in with every home. With Marvel Comics artwork, DC Comics art prints, Star Wars™ wall art, and more to be found, there’s something for every collector’s own unique style.
So when browsing for your next gallery-worthy addition, be sure to consider these different format offerings that may be available. Not every print is offered in every format, but it’s worth exploring your options to see what is out there.
Giclée on Paper
Most prints you will find from Sideshow Art Prints are offered as giclées on paper. These prints are all officially licensed, embossed with a Seal of Authenticity, and are generally printed on certified archival matte Museo Rag 300GSM — this 100% cotton fiber paper is acid-free, fade-resistant, and displays colors vibrantly. Epson archival inks ensure high fidelity to the original illustration, accurately representing the colors the artist intended for the image.
Of course, every print release is unique and some do use different papers and printing techniques depending on what best suits the design — you can find more about the material specifications on each individual product page. Many are also limited edition, and some have even more exclusive variant edition releases. Some editions come hand-signed by the artist, while others feature an authorized, automated artist signature.
These giclée on paper releases are available unframed and can also be purchased in a custom framed presentation. These frames, designed by Parker Jordan, come complete with a custom mat design to enhance the image, and they feature clear framing-grade acrylic faces for secure display. The mats, foam board backing, and adhesive tape are all certified archival. Hanging hardware also comes pre-installed, so all you have to do is decide where to hang it! Otherwise, when you order unframed, the print is wrapped and hand-rolled in acid-free paper and inserted into a protective plastic sleeve before being shipped in a 4″ diameter tube.
Canvas Art Print
Canvas prints offer collectors a unique presentation for these detailed illustrations, developed to preserve the image with texture and durability. Printed on Breathing Color Lyve Canvas, these prints are certified archival from start to finish, designed to make a long-lasting addition to any collection. Breathing Color provides measurably superior qualities like brightness, line quality, tonal range, and overall image fidelity with canvas that takes and preserves inkjet colors without compromise to the overall presentation.
Using no optical brighteners, which are known to eventually deteriorate in a print, these canvas prints feature Epson archival UltraChrome HDR pigment inks and are even finished off with certified archival protective varnish. Mounted in a black wood floating frame with a wire hanger, no additional hardware is required. These high-end prints make a luxury addition to any collection.
HD Aluminum Metal Print
Another visually distinct offering is the HD (High Definition) Aluminum Metal Prints. For collectors who want a little extra shine in their collection, this is a wonderful option as the metal surface is glossy, incredibly vibrant, and durable. The ChromaLuxe aluminum metal panels undergo the process of dye-sublimation to heat transfer the image onto the sheet, which involves inkjet printing the artwork onto a transfer paper and then subjecting it to heat in order to turn the dyes into a gas that solidifies onto the aluminum. Once the metal cools, the dyes are permanently infused into the print — a blend of art and science!
Sideshow’s HD Aluminum Metal Prints come mounted in black wood floating frames, meaning there’s a negative space border between the edges of the metal print and the wood frame, creating a focus on the image itself. Hanging hardware is already installed for ease of display. The final product is also scratch, fade, fire, and water-resistant, and can be easily cleaned with household cleaners and microfiber cloth. Simple maintenance can ensure the print keeps its shine and museum-quality surface for years to come.
Wood block prints make a charming addition to your collection and have multiple display options, given that the wood blocks are capable of standing upright on a shelf or being hung on a wall with sawtooth hanging hardware already installed. The image is giclée printed on long-lasting terylene cotton and dry-mounted to a Baltic birch wood face. Additionally, the print features a Douglas Fir frame with semigloss varnish for image preservation. Thanks to the Epson archival inks, the colors are vibrant and don’t take on the wood grain color variances because of the terylene cotton buffer.
With multiple presentation options, these art collectibles can fit anywhere in your collection. Take the Mighty Nein Portrait Series by Sam Hogg for example — you can display the 9-grid set along your wall, or stack the sturdy blocks on your favorite gaming table or Critical Role bookshelf.
A less commonly offered, but still highly collectible, display option for your artwork is Sideshow’s custom skateboard deck releases. These unique art pieces are limited edition and feature the artwork resin printed on 7-ply Canadian Maple wood. They are capable of being used on the street (wheels and axels are not included and must be attached) or being displayed on a wall as a truly unique feature in any home.
With featured artists like Mike Mahle and Urban Aztec, if you see one of these Sideshow skateboard decks available, you don’t want to miss snagging one of the extremely limited editions for this fun and functional collectible.
The Sideshow Art Prints Program is always innovating the ways in which we can present your favorite heroes and villains to you in an engaging and enduring art collectible format.
While every new print release is unique, each is created with consideration of what materials will enhance the viewing and display experience — we have offered linocut prints on Nepalese Lokta paper, UV printed wood prints, and even oversized prints with lustrous silk screen and glass diamond dust applications to really make the artwork shine. Additionally, prints offered from our distribution partners like Thomas Kinkade Studios, Vice Press, and ACME Archives all have their own unique, signature presentations styles.
