The 6 Best Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Quotes

This year, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi celebrates its 40th anniversary. To honor its indelible impact on pop culture, we’re looking back at the best quotes from the film. Check them out below!

“Who are you?” “Someone who loves you.”

Han Solo and Leia Organa

Han Solo and Leia Organa’s will-they-or-won’t-they relationship firmly cemented itself into a romance in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Unfortunately, that major step forward got put on pause ’cause of the whole carbonite thing. A new couple can’t really take long walks on the beach if one of them is frozen solid and imprisoned in Jabba the Hutt’s palace. However, that previous interruption makes the eventual reunion way sweeter. Rescuing Han from his frigid prison, Leia unmasks herself and reveals she is someone who loves him. And like — we know. But that was still seriously romantic.

“I used to live here, you know.” “You’re gonna die here, you know. Convenient.”

Luke Skywalker and Han Solo

This is perhaps one of the funniest exchanges in the entire original trilogy. And not just because Han makes such a silly face to punctuate his point — although we admit, that does contribute nicely to the joke’s delivery. No, it’s because Han’s comeback is witty and sardonic, fitting his character to a tee. Plus, it’s equally hilarious to think our heroes will really die out in the middle of the desert that Luke Skywalker once called home. There’s an entire intergalactic conflict at play, but first they have to defeat what is essentially a giant, anthropomorphic stomach called the sarlacc. That’s Star Wars at its finest.

“But beware. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side are they.”

Look, we know how cliche it is to remind you to listen to and respect your elders. But 900 years of wisdom and experience are packed into this little green dude. He truly has a lot of good things to say. Yoda’s quote advises Luke — and by extension, the audience — not to dwell in the dark. Hatred and negativity can only lead to your own ruin. Giving in to pessimism will only make you lose your way and your light.

“So, what I told you was true … from a certain point of view.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Sassy Obi-Wan Kenobi is our favorite Obi-Wan Kenobi. Additionally, to be fair to the dude, he’s been through a lot. So we can’t entirely blame him for skewing the perspective and narrative a bit for his own sanity. In a very poetic sort of way, he’s also (almost) right — Anakin Skywalker is dead, killed by Darth Vader long ago on the planet Mustafar. Nothing the old Force ghost told Luke was an outright lie. We can appreciate that, even if it is pretty frustrating for young Skywalker.

“You’ve failed, your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.”

Luke Skywalker

Undoubtedly, this Luke Skywalker quote is one of the most famous in the OT. After repeatedly attempting to seduce Luke to the dark side, Darth Sidious™ must admit defeat. How could he fight against this ultimate declaration? Luke’s words here are incredibly striking, reaching into the core of his fans’ very beings. The young Jedi knows himself, confident in his abilities and his future. He rejects outside influence to declare what he knows to be his true path. If that isn’t inspirational, we don’t know what is.

“Just for once … let me look at you with my own eyes.”

Darth Vader

We know you cried! We sure did. Do. Every time we re-watch Return of the Jedi, actually. Finally, Darth Vader rebels against his Sith™ master and abuser. He cannot survive the escape from the Death Star™, but he travels with his son as far as he is able. When his time is up, he requests to look at Luke with his own eyes — those of Anakin Skywalker, Jedi and father and loving husband. Despite his charred and scarred visage, this is the softest we’ve ever seen the villain. It’s a truly beautiful way to end his story.
