From the premiere to the finale, Agatha All Along was a wild, witchy ride. But the first episode performed a grounding spell with its take on crime drama television. As the after effects of Wanda’s hex still hold Agatha captive, she operates as Agnes, a small-town detective on a tricky case. Enter FBI Agent Rio, who seems to push every one of Agnes’ buttons.

The two immediately have palpable chemistry. Their lingering looks say everything that their sharp words don’t. While Agnes initially bristles at Rio’s intrusion, Rio lets Agnes know, “If you wanna be in control, you can be.” With that, their will-they-won’t-they rapport is established. Plus, we all know what Rio means every time she says “te veo.”

Who Is Rio Vidal?

Rio Vidal is a new character created for the Agatha All Along series. However, Rio is just an alias; she is actually Death herself. Lilia Calderu discovers this in episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine,” though Agatha is aware of this truth. As a cosmic entity, Death can change her appearance and Rio is the form she’s used as Agatha’s lover.

Each Agatha and Rio interaction ups the tension building between them. At this point, we don’t have the details of their shared history but its reach extends beyond Wanda’s powerful hex. Besides, the body language as Agatha and Rio share pizza and beer points to undeniable attraction.

Rio wants to help Agatha, but both women are struggling to find their place in this devious altered reality. We can see the pain flash across Rio’s face, her eyes filled with warmth as she watches Agatha struggle with recovering her identity. For now, Rio is willing to wait — but she still can’t resist unraveling a bit of the mystery for her beloved.

Once Agatha finally regains her sense of self, Rio pops up in her own true form (well, sorta). The two witches face off in a heated display of power. Tears will be shed during this scene, just so you’re prepared. Any powerful love is bound to leave behind some scars and in this touching bonding moment among the coven, Rio confesses that Agatha is her scar. Long ago, Rio had to do her job but it broke Agatha’s heart in the process.

This confession elicits anger from Agatha, who storms off. But the sincerity in Rio’s words burns with just as much intensity. Scars can be signs of resilience, but they’re always reminders of past pain. And sometimes it’s easier to forget.

Episode 5, “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power”

Even within a tumultuous relationship like Agatha and Rio’s, there can be brief moments of joy. As the witches ride through the night sky on their brooms, they can’t help but laugh at becoming stereotypes. The hexenbesen ritual further cements the coven’s innate pairs, including Agatha and Rio. As any queer person will tell you, meeting the family is fraught with even more pitfalls than for a non-queer couple. When Evanora Harkness appears as a vengeful ghost, hellbent on killing her daughter once and for all, Rio bites back. She asserts that Evanora will not lay a hand on Agatha. The venom in Rio’s words belies her formidable power and how willingly she wields it in Agatha’s defense. Now that’s a bad boy with a heart of gold.

The Kiss of Death

Episode 8, “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End”

All along, we’ve seen how Agatha’s gift is to take the power of other witches. This act of thievery always results in the other witch’s death. But in a last bid to save Billy Maximoff, Agatha sacrifices herself to Death with a passionate kiss.

Instead of absorbing Rio’s power, Agatha is overcome by death. As Agatha passes to the other side, Rio honors her lover’s last wish. Death shows her true form, a chilling skeletal visage, so that Agatha never has to see Rio’s face again.

Floral Farewell

Episode 8, “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End”

As is only appropriate, Death’s farewell to her truest love is heartachingly poignant. Death is the original Green Witch, so she buries Agatha’s body in the earth. Flowers bloom all across the fresh grave, a mix of purple violets and warmer greens that pay tribute to their eternal connection. Only Death herself could offer such a farewell. Rest in petals, Agatha.

“Please, my love!”

Episode 9, “Maiden Mother Crone”

In the final season 1 episode, we’re given a flashback. Agatha wails in the woods through the pain of childbirth just as Death shows up. She knows what Rio’s appearance means, and Agatha delivers what’s arguably the series’ most powerful line: “Please, my love!”

It’s a plea filled with fear, desperation, and ultimately, love. Agatha appeals to Rio’s love, hoping against hope that she will spare baby Nicholas. While Death’s call cannot be ignored forever, Rio grants Agatha more time with Nicholas — the “special treatment” that Rio references elsewhere in the series. She defies her cosmic duty for the woman she’ll always love.
