What We’d Like to See in Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

It’s almost She-Hulk time, baby! Marvel’s latest live-action series will take the world by storm this week, and I’m ready to see Jennifer Walters embrace her Hulk-ness and take names as a kick-ass lawyer. Tatiana Maslany is a brilliant performer who will undoubtedly inject Jennifer with humor and nuanced pathos. 

So, to celebrate the premiere of the greenest MCU series to ever green, I’ve compiled a list of things I’d like to see in the Disney+ show. Read on, friends!

A Peek Into Jennifer’s Past Pre-Hulk

She-Hulk seems to take liberties with Jennifer’s origin story, i.e., how she obtains her Hulk abilities. In the comics, agents of the crime boss who killed Jen’s mother shot her, and, thankfully, Bruce Banner’s blood transfusion saved her life. However, a car crash might be the origin behind Jennifer’s new superpowers. In one clip, we see an unidentified alien spacecraft violently knock Jennifer and Bruce’s car off the road. While Bruce would have survived such a crash, a human might not be so lucky.

So, does the show keep some of Jen’s comic book past intact? I’d love to see flashbacks of a young Jennifer and Bruce reading books at the library, wherein they’d occasionally spend the night to protect the latter from his father’s abuse. Perhaps we can meet Jennifer’s mother in a flashback before she tragically perishes or see what her dad’s up to now.

The Introduction of the Below-Place and the Green Door

The Below-Place is the foundation of Hell and the last layer of reality. It’s not a fun place. The One Below All rules over it with a malevolent fist. The One Below All is the dark, evil counterpart to the One Above All, who rules the Multiverse. OBA wants to destroy the Multiverse. Anyway, when Jennifer died, she arrived at the Below-Place. Thankfully, she crossed the threshold of the Green Door, bringing her back to this plane. 

The MCU has yet to introduce the Below-Place or the Green Door. It seems like the right time to do it, given it’s an essential part of Jennifer’s origins and it links to the One Above All. We’re all about the Multiverse now, people!

Titania’s Introduction Potentially Spawning the Frightful Four

Well, kids, we finally have the Fantastic Four in its rightful place in the MCU, now that John Krasinski has portrayed an alternate universe Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Additionally, Marvel president Kevin Feige revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that we can expect Fantastic Four, a new feature ushering these heroes into the MCU, in 2024. 

Titania, Jennifer’s frequent antagonist in the She-Hulk comics, has been a member of the Frightful Four, the antithesis of the Fantastic Four. Formed by Sandman, Wizard, and Trapster, the initial objective of the Frightful Four was to humiliate the Fantastic Four. Among their ranks at various points in the comics, we’ve seen Medusa, Thundra, Hydro-Man, Klaw, and yes, Titania. 

Marvel also acknowledged the Inhumans with the Black Bolt cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The MCU is well known for methodically introducing different characters of a team before having them join forces on a venture. For example, the franchise still appears to be building toward the Young Avengers, with characters like Kate Bishop, America Chavez, Kid Loki, Patriot, Speed, and Wiccan already gaining traction in this cinematic mythos. 

It’s not far-fetched to think we’ll see the Frightful Four, especially with Titania playing a pivotal role in She-Hulk.

Matt Murdock/Daredevil Reference His Life in Hell’s Kitchen

Okay, maybe this is wishful thinking on my part. I really miss the Netflix series and wish it was canon. Daredevil/Matt Murdock might be canon in the MCU, but Feige wants to softly reboot him, essentially devaluing the three-season show on the mega-streamer in which he starred. So, does this mean that characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page don’t exist in their previous iterations? 

If Vincent D’Onofrio can reprise his role as Wilson Fisk, AKA the version of Kingpin we know and love, then hopefully the same is true of Nelson and Page. I need my dynamic trio back together again on the Disney+ Daredevil series, so any reference to them will ensure my contentment.

Jennifer’s Sassy, Quick-Witted Humor on Full Display

Ask any She-Hulk fan, and they’ll tell you one of their favorite aspects of the character is her quick wit. Judging by the clips, trailers, and featurettes, Marvel seems to lean into the playfulness of Jennifer Walters. There are a handful of fourth wall breaks, self-referential digs, and a smattering of the franchise’s trademark quippy remarks. 

I need them to go bigger with it. Full-throttle on the humor. That said, I don’t want everyone to possess the same sense of humor as Jennifer because that dilutes the fun and takes the spotlight off Jennifer, making her less unique as a character. Remember, as she says in a recent clip, this is her show. So, Bruce, Emil, and Wong — back off!

The Grandmaster’s Ship Setting Up World War Hulk

Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed in the clip of Jennifer and Bruce crashing that the ship involved looks an awful lot like the Grandmaster’s spacecraft from Planet Sakaar, where our fave green guy spent some time in Thor: Ragnarok. The Commodore is a leisure vessel owned by the Grandmaster. Now, even if it’s not the Grandmaster’s craft, it could still hail from Sakaar, leading us to World War Hulk. 

World War Hulk is a Bruce Banner-centric narrative wherein the Hulk was banished from Earth courtesy of the Illuminati (introduced to us in Multiverse of Madness). Bruce’s time on Sakaar strengthened his abilities immensely, so when he returned to Earth, he sought revenge against the Illuminati. 

Bruce proceeds to battle each member one by one, including Tony Stark. Of course, Iron Man is no longer with us, but other members, such as Doctor Strange and Namor, could eventually participate as members of the organization.

Nikki Ramos Is More Than She Appears

I’d like there to be a twist regarding Nikki Ramos. Marvel’s never short on surprises, and they can throw in a jaw-dropping twist from time to time. We know next to nothing about Nikki as a character other than she’s a paralegal at Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway, and Jennifer’s best friend. She’s also a lead on She-Hulk. It’s rare to have a main character on a Marvel series with so little info about them available to the masses.

So, could she be more than she appears to be? I have a theory. Nikki is Jazinda, the daughter of the Super-Skrull Kl’rt. Hear me out — Skrulls are shapeshifters, right? While Jazinda falls into Secret Invasion territory, She-Hulk could introduce her to establish her character and relationship with Jennifer. The pair become close friends, after all. 

Currently, there’s no confirmation that Tatiana Maslany will appear on Secret Invasion (it’s Marvel — when do they confirm anything remotely spoiler-y?), but the Skrulls are already established in the MCU thanks to Captain Marvel. I think making Nikki actually Jazinda could be a fun twist, even though it deviates from the comics (sorry, nerds).
