Star Wars: The Acolyte Season 1 Episode 4 Review
Star Wars: The Acolyte™ blesses us with another outing that propels the overarching narrative, whisking us away to Khofar™, where yet another Jedi Master falls. (RIP, Kelnacca™.) We finally see Mae’s™ Sith Master; however, his identity remains unknown. What we do know is that he’s as formidable as they come. The cliffhanger in “Day” certainly leaves us in an exciting place for next week’s episode.
I’ve seen some rumors circulating about the identity of Mae’s Master. One prevailing theory appears to be Qimir™. I can see it. He’s certainly suspicious in his own right. I suppose only time and more episodes will tell.
(If you still need to catch up, be sure to visit the recap for last week’s episode “Destiny.”)
Khofar
We open with Master Kelnacca on Khofar. He returns to his domicile and goes about his day. We see the same swirling pattern of dots on the wall – identical to the stamp Mother Aniseya™ gives Mae™ during the Ascension on Brendok™. I bet this will mean something later…
Next, on Coruscant™, Jecki Lon™ trains with her fellow Padawans™. Osha™ arrives after class to bid farewell. She thanks Jecki for helping clear her name and finding Mae. Jecki assumes Osha would stick around longer, at least until they apprehend Mae. Osha reveals she plans to slip away without saying goodbye to Master Sol™. It’s the ol’ Irish Goodbye.
Mae and Qimir
Then, we see Mae and Qimir prepare to enter the jungle to track down Kelnacca. Qimir warns Mae he knows plenty of folks who couldn’t hack it in the dense landscape and vegetation of Khofar. He also risked his life to help her, making this mission all the more crucial to carry out successfully.
Plus, it’s imperative that Mae kill Kelnacca without a weapon. It’s what their faceless Master wants. How does one murder a Jedi without an implement? Mae urges him to come along – they only have three hours of daylight left.
Who Trained Mae?
Later, Master Sol, Master Vernestra™, and the rest of their Jedi buddies dissect the Osha/Mae situation. Mae has already killed two of their own – Masters Indara™ and Torbin™. Now, she’s making a beeline toward Kelnacca.
One Jedi, Master Holden™, notes that Mae’s fighting style shows she’s trained with a Jedi; however, she’s also weak.
Side note: The Jedi Master beside Holden is none other than Ki-Adi-Mundi™, who served on the Jedi High Council during The Phantom Menace™.
A Path Forward
Vernestra takes over, believing it’s time they act. They should head to Khofar to capture Mae. Sol asks Vernestra to let him bring her in. Vernestra allows this and adds that Mae might be only a cog in the machine. She’s a small part of a much larger plan spearheaded by this enigmatic Master of hers.
Vernestra asks Sol if they have something Mae wants. Sol knows precisely what to give her.
Never Seen His Face
Meanwhile, Mae and Qimir continue their trek through the jungle on Khofar. Qimir impresses the importance of Mae’s objective – killing the Wookiee™ Jedi without a weapon. Mae asks Qimir if the latter has seen their Master’s face. He claims he hasn’t.
Mae questions Qimir about meeting Osha. What was she like? Qimir admits that Osha seemed to be in over her head. Also, she seemed fond of Sol. Mae’s expression changes upon hearing that. Of course, we know how Osha and Sol bonded on Brendok all those years ago.
Join Me
Next, Sol finds Osha right before she prepares to leave Coruscant. He wants her to accompany him to Khofar so they can track down Mae. As long as she doesn’t have to don the civilian robe, she’s game. Unfortunately, Osha is a civilian, so the robe is a must.
Then, Yord Fandar™ briefs the team on the Mae mission as they’re en route to Khofar. Osha meets Bazil™, the gang’s cute little tracker who looks like a beaver. Pip isn’t a fan.
Find Mae and Kelnacca
The team lands on Khofar, where they question the locals. According to them, Kelnacca ventured into the jungle and never resurfaced. Earlier, Yord told the group that the Order stationed the Wookiee Jedi on the planet a year ago, but he hasn’t responded to any transmissions.
Yord gives Bazil a taste of Mae’s scent so he can search for her. Later, our crew gets their aerial Fellowship of the Ring moment as they descend a steep hillside with much fewer trees.
Exploring Their Surroundings
The Jedi and Osha encounter an umbramoth™ and several larvae wrapped around trees. Osha senses the umbramoth approaching, which Sol kills with a simple swipe of his Lightsaber™. The others note that the creature was attracted to the light. It’s nice to know that a moth is still a moth in this vast sci-fi universe. Osha tells Jecki about her ability to sense the umbramoth. She seems to be tapping into the Force again.
Meanwhile, Mae asks Qimir if they can stop for a spell. After all, she’ll need her strength to kill Kelnacca without a weapon. Qimir allows this, opting to leave to fetch Mae water while she rests.
Betrayal
Later, Mae entraps Qimir. She’s decided to turn herself over to Kelnacca. Her sister takes precedence over what her faceless Master wants her to do. Qimir counters that the Jedi might kill her, especially for what she’s already done.
Next, the Jedi and Osha inch closer to Kelnacca’s domicile. Sol urges Osha to keep her distance despite her willingness to help. She believes the rekindling of her Force sensitivity has given her the courage to face Mae again.
Bazil Discovers Mae
Suddenly, Mae stumbles upon Bazil, who calls out to the Jedi when he sees her. Of course, they have to track their tracker now. Mae slinks past Bazil, though, and sneaks into Kelnacca’s home. Unfortunately, the Wookiee Jedi is dead, having been felled by a mysterious foe.
The Jedi arrive, demanding that whoever is inside Kelnacca’s humble abode show themselves with their hands in the air. However, Mae remains frozen because a sinister presence permeates the space.
Scary, Smiley Sith
Mae’s Master arrives on the scene. He approaches Osha silently, his smiley helmet looking like something from my nightmares. He unleashes his red saber. The Jedi whirl around to face the malicious newcomer. They, too, unsheath their sabers, charging forward at the threat. Sol urges Osha to run.
However, the Sith Master knocks Osha aside with a wave of his hand. Then, he flicks his hand forward, pushing the Jedi backward.
This enemy won’t be so easy to defeat.
